7/11 Petrol Prices Are Insane Today

Took a trip to Melbourne East this morning. Most 7/11 listed price for U91 is $2.359.

I had locked price at $1.839 and due to the capped at 25 cents per litre, my discount dropped from $15 to $7.50.

A bad day to pump petrol at 7/11.

I've noticed a lot that fuel in metro is more expensive than regional. Never used to be like that. Plus a lot more fluctuation in metro.

    • I always thought regional perhaps more expensive due to the transport distance cost.

I guess it depends on how regional you go. At Cameron Corner it's a pretty stable $2.70 for 91.

      • Yeah, it used to be a little like that, not so much anymore.

Should use petrolspy to track fuel prices, some servos are still under $2 in south Melbourne. I dont really use 7/11 anymore just find the cheapest price and if not i use 7/11 petrol lock as a last resort.

I am 100kms from South Melbourne…… not going to drive that fair to save a few cents.

There isn't a 7/11 close to me either.

I'm regional. U91 has been $1.84 everyday for the last 3-4 months at nearly every service station. The only exception is the shell station which is $1.89

    • I worked in a petrol station regionally about 20 years ago, BP would come and fill up our tanks (privately owned petrol station but BP was the supplier), the machine would print out the cost and we'd whack 3c on top of that no matter what was going on as our margin. Since we were small and pricing only changed when we got a delivery we didn't update the price very often, 2-3 weeks for memory.

People would whinge about our prices being more expensive than a place 10km away, but most people didn't care and just paid whatever. The ones that whinged also usually bought a 600ml coke from the fridge for $3.

      • The place like this near me is cheapest half the time, cause they don't follow the cycle.

you know there's a public holiday coming when fuel starts to increase.

  • been $2+ for ages up here in Brisbane…

    • BP was 190 for 91 at the Gabba on Sunday. The 7-11 there was 189 on Friday but went up on Sat or Sun. It's ~235 just about everywhere today though.

  • due to Middle East Conflict ETC

Go to 711s that are in close proximity to other stations like Shell, BP, etc. They have to compete on price and so usually they are cheaper. For example, there's a 711 in Hoppers Crossing on Forsyth Rd that was showing $2.30 for U91. But just a few km away, there's another 711 on Leakes road, next to a United petrol station. That was selling at $1.85.

After 711 have brought in this 25c discount cap, I've started going to other brands.

  • I've found Apco and Liberty are cheaper round my area.

  • Just remember 49.6 cents of every litre is tax, then you have the GST so you pay tax on a tax. To top it off if you're just your average wage earning Joe then its a tax on a tax paid with money you've already been taxed on.

Free for me between sun up and sun down and $0.08/kWh from midnight to 7am…

Even my electric lawnmower is looking like a good saving with fuel prices at the moment.

Definitely use in conjunction with Petrol Spy. There are usually a handful of servos, mainly independents, that don't follow the trends of most servos.

    • +1

Yeah, I have to start using Petrol Spy. I have been using 7/11 locked prices and never ever once the gap was more than 25cts. Today is the first.

    Thank god WA has Fuelwatch

A lot of our servo's go to $2.30 tomorrow, but can still find bargains (Costco $1.757 with membership)

  • Oh thanks for the reminder/PSA. I locked in at $1.899 (locally) before the spike and was gonna use it before it expires but given the 25c cap won't be able to maximize the locked price anyway 😑

  • I wish 7/11 bring back the unlimited price cap. 25 cents is a joke & people are going to other servos. At least consider upping the limit to 35c/L discount instead of the measly 25c/L cap.

Good times when I could use the lock it in at 171.9c/L when bowser shot up to 214.9 cents/L. nearly 43 cents saving per litre & I usually fill up about 50 litres saving me a good $21 dollaroos. Ka-Ching savings!

Ah well there is Ampol, EG ampol, Shell, coles express, OOM, Libertry,Freedomfuels, Caltex, BP, United, Mega fuels, Pearl energy, Pacific ,Metro & Costco to choose from. Whichever is the cheapest gets my money! Heaps of choice of servos around me. Shop around people!

    • I do wonder how much impact everyone's helicopters had on their decision.

      Shop around people!

Surely you've always done that even before the 25c cap.

25c is still worth it if you lock it in right when prices go up and have to fill up again within a week when everyone else is still charging top prices.

      • "Surely you've always done that even before the 25c cap."

Didn't use the "virtual chopper" route. I would just use the default search lock in cheapest in my vicinity radius.
And its kinda unfair to 7/11 & individual franchise owners. I don't think make a huge margin just selling fuel to us.

My suburb has one of cheapest fuels compared to neighbouring suburbs. Lots of competition along the road. 4 or 5 different servos lined up about 2 km apart or less.

Plus if you fill up 7 or 8 times you get a freebie product to redeem in store. The free small coffee offer when you fill up was a good promo too.

        • Didn't use the "virtual chopper" route. I would just use the default search lock in cheapest in my vicinity radius.

I meant surely you shopped around even before the 25c cap.
          I didn't chopper around either.

  • NordVPN no longer works for inter state?

    • No, it looks like it doesn’t :(

      Anyone know a workaround?
