Guzman y Gomez 15% Public Holiday Surcharge Fast Food Surcharge Yeh/Nah

I think we 'unfortunately' have gotten used to public holiday surcharges in most restaurants. But today i got a bit of GYG and was hit with a 15% surcharge - now credit to the server, she informed me over drive thru there was a surcharge today which I did agree to pay however I made a mental note to not go back during a public holiday.

I also went to Maccas and got a coffee later today which had no surcharges.

My question is are you ok with public holiday surcharges for fast food restaurants? I personally don't support any public holiday surcharges, but I might be in the minority here.

You can either be charged the surcharge OR the business will incorporate it into their prices thus meaning you’ll pay more overall.

The surcharge is to account for a higher minimum wage (double pay) that workers are entitled to on public holidays. 15% is fair considering wage costs are doubling (+100%) on those days.

I think most businesses are just jumping on the bandwagon on charging extra on public holidays because they can.

GyG is overpriced garbage and no I do not agree with surcharges for these large fast food companies. Small family business it is understandable.

Most GYG are small family businesses just trading with the GYG brand. This is how franchising works.

      • It's interesting how people have a differing view of the poll question on fast food vs ANY restaurant (where they are effectively the same thing) - which implies a lot of people are more offended by the idea of it being a fast food joint but OK with other restaurants - where ultimately all restaurants (including fast food) need to pay public holiday 2.5x rates (so fast food in reality are not any different)

The award rates apply and if a company cant pay their staff the award rate they shouldn't operate full stop….
This surcharge is a cash grab that the workers will never see.

Omg Loot and Plunder this is one of those rare occasions i 100% agree with you

They literally get the public holiday rates ….

As long as its clearly stated that there is a surcharge, you can make the choice to not eat there, then its fine. However if its a surprise or very fine print you wouldn't normally look at and then they charge you after you have ordered, that is scummy behavior and definitely against it.

I got hit at Zambrero by a 15% surcharge today, literally no signs that I could see (and I looked after getting hit). Server didn't even mention it when adding it to cost, I only knew because I could see it on the screen.

Funnily enough their EFTPOS was down as well, and they managed to mention that to every single customer as well as having 2 or 3 signs up about it!

In that case you can refuse to pay the extra charge, nothing they can do.

If the extra charge is actually going to the workers who are receiving penalty rates then it's good, however if it's just a cash grab by the business and the workers don't receive anything extra on a PH, then it should not be allowed.

For sure, majority of the surcharge is going to wages, workers are paid 2.5x for PHs. Or, are you saying the surcharge should be ontop of their penalty rates?

A few quick calculations on minimum wage, let's say they work 7.6 hours
      23.23 x 7.6 = $176.548 x 2.5 = $441.37. Difference: $264.822

Let's take one example of a successful cafe with the annual revenue of 600k (apparently 600k or more is good). That's roughly $1,643.83 per day on average over 365 days.

Cafe has 4 staff members working all day on the PH. That's an extra $264.822 x 4 of penalty rates. That's $1059.288 extra the cafe needs to pay for PH wages. If the cafe makes $1,643.83 + 15% surcharge in that day, that's only $246.57 extra in surcharges they made in the day. Not enough to cover the $1059.288 for all 4 staff.

But of course, this is very simple calculation.

But I don't agree with large fast food chain corporations charging a surcharge, but I am fine paying small businesses.

      • Agree with you hasher22, It's interesting how most people here have a poor understanding of the costs of doing business.

All fast food / restaurant staff should be covered by an award = 2.5x
Whether they choose to ask for additional % to help compensate/offset some of the additional cost is up to them.

If you can not make a profit on public holidays then its simple math DON'T OPEN and don't hit people with this bullcrap cost.

This business has had all year to put a little away for public holidays instead of making this cost on the day
Poor business management should not be forced upon others to make up their shortfall in profit on public holidays (you have had a whole year to prepare for public holidays it didn't just fall from the sky)

  • They don't think themselves are fast food restaurants.

    • if you got a 'driver thru' you're fast foot

  • U think that's bad… try paying a valentines day surcharge or some bull shit that isnt even a puiblic holiday or a weekend rate
