Best Projector for under $1000

Hi all,
I am on a search for a Projector for my bedroom under $1000 (Can stretch price if needed)
I have my eye on this one from Costco but still not sure if its worth the jump to $1299.

Requirments

  • Room is 3.7 metres long will be placed on one side to project to other
  • HDMI Support for laptop and maybe future Apple TV
  • Don't need a portable projector
  • Will be placed off centre so needs lens shift or keystones (I think it's called)

Thanks in advanced

  • What size screen are you aiming for?

You need to decide between a short throw vs standard lens ratio.

I would suggest the below short throw if you want a big screen. The Costco one is a generic no-name.

    Optoma GT1080HDR

Xgimi is not a generic no name. They have a very stablished line up of projector products.

What I would suggest to OP, is that fork the extra cash for a 4K model, the difference is noticeably visible on a large screen. I went from 1080p Xiaomi to a 4k Xgimi and the picture clarity is significantly improved and the overall experience is much better.

    • Would probably want above 85 inches if possible.
What is the difference between short throw and standard lens?
Thanks for the suggestion I’ll looking into that model.

      • Short throw are the type that you sit right up to the projection surface.

Standard Lens is something you have to position from across the room. (but there's no "Standard", some have a tighter zoom than others)

        • Ultra Short Throw (UST) is what you set right up against the projection surface.

A short throw projector is still projected from the rear but has a different lens ratio, it is designed for shorter depth rooms to still be able to achieve large projection sizes.

Definitely recommend paying more for 4k, but the linked xgimi is NOT a 4K projector, it's only 1080p FullHD. (Its only "4K feature" is that it'll downscale a 4K signal to 1080p)

One of the most important things to check is that that the throw distance of the PJ is suitable for your mounting location and screen size.
No point buying a projector that will only give you a 55" screen from the only possible mounting location. Similarly no point buying a projector if the smallest screen size it can project from your mounting location is larger than your available screen area.
    Check here;

While you're there, check the brightness. These days, check that it's not going to be too bright! Especially for a bedroom! (toggle on eco mode if it is too bright, bonus will be extended lamp life)

Finally, Horizontal lens shift is a high end feature (or at least used to be), and keystone is not ideal… (it's the digital zoom of image correction).
Ideally go for a short throw instead.

    • I thought that model was 4K, how do I find a legitimate 4K then, it seems a lot of brands are saying the 4K feature. How much do real 4K start around?

      • The give away is in the Name

Xgimi Horizon FHD Projector XK03K (emphasis added)

        FHD = FullHD = 1080p

        and in the Specifications

        Screen Resolution 1920 x 1080 1080p

  • Likes everyone has suggested, go for 4K projector. But if you are only looking for a small screen in bedroom, then portable should be a better option. Costco has Xgimi portable projector as well.
I have Xgimi Horizon Pro 4K. My distance to wall is 3.5m and projector is set diagonally. It gives me 129 inches screen.
    Hope this helps.

    • 129 inches would be amazing and it seems you have almost the the same size room. Wouldn’t portable be worse value overall compared to a non portable?
Plus any downsides to portable? Like battery replacement etc?
Also just checked the price of the projector you mentioned seems to be over $2000 over budget for me

      • … 129 inches would be amazing

        thats what she said

      • Your room is 200mm big, so, assume 2-3 inches bigger. 😉
Yes, 4K is expensive. But if you don't want to spend that much, then go for Xgimi portable one from Costco.

Honestly, Costco's customer service is amazing. I would say, go and buy portable one, they have 90 day return policy with no questions asked. If you feel, it is not good enough for you, then you can always return.

I have heard good reviews about Xgimi portable projectors as well. But haven't got chance to use them yet.

You may also check out some of the YouTube videos for Xgimi portable projectors as well.

      • My room is 4m deep and projects onto a 135" screen.

        I have the BENQ X3000i, it's throw ratio is 1.15 ~ 1.50

You can lookup projector calculators to work out what size screen a specific projector can throw from a certain distance.

The BenQ one is here if you end up looking at their available models.
        https://projectorcalculator.benq.com/

Just keep in mind it is from the lens, not the rear of the projector.

Ideally you want to project without zoom or keystone correction to maintain the best possible picture quality.
