Looking for a value mid-range Gaming Laptop for about $600-$700

I helping someone find a new laptop, there maximum budget is about $800 but they would much prefer something under $700. Might be a bit of a stretch but there looking for something for gaming. They want to play future games of about 2 years at an acceptable frame-rate and quality (approx what the PS3 can handle) probably medium to low settings.

15.6" screens should be alright. But 17" would be great.

I'm guessing it would be something with a Core i5 processor 2.4Ghz, 4gb ddr3 ram, 250-500gb HDD. I'm not sure about the graphics as I haven't studied laptop graphics for quite a while now. Just something that could handle skyrim, sims 3, and similar future games for approx 2 years under medium settings as were trying to make this laptop last at least a couple of years.

Any ideas? I read in another thread it's probably a good idea to wait for christmas sales. But looking for something in the next couple of weeks. Was also looking at a PS3 which someone I know has one for sale but have already bought some pc games that don't work on this person's current laptop.

My advice is that the video card will be more important than the i5. Don't be afraid to drop to an i3 with a better video card, though for market reasons most better laptops will come with an i5 anyway. Get at least a 7670m, though you should be able to get a bit better for that budget.

    • thanks, :)
I guess there aren't any good deals on at the moment. I will keep a look on OzBargain :)
Also I usually recommend Nvidia graphics first since I'm unfamiliar with Ati but there is always a first. Lol… and google is my friend :)

I'll wait until something good comes up, unless anyone sees anything. Please let me know thanks :)

      • nvidia is fine, probably look for a 640 or 650.

Keep an eye on the Dell website, they have some pretty good sales. Try the Inspiron SE (special edition) as they've got decent graphics cards in them. If you're trying to make sure it lasts a couple of years get the warranty too.

  • If you don't mind Windows 7 (you can upgrade to Win 8 for $15), you can get a Dell Inspiron 15R Special Edition with i7-3612QM, 6GB RAM, 1TB HDD, AMD Radeon 7730M 2GB GPU, DVD Drive on clearance for $699…

I don't know if the 7730M GPU is good enough for gaming, but you can't expect much for $699.

There's also an Inspiron 17R Special Edition with lower specs (i5-3210M) but NVIDIA GeForce GT 650M GDDR5 2GB GPU for $699 (refer to same link above).

The 7730m is OK, but the 650m is significantly better. 650m+i5 is a clear win over 7730m+i7 to me. Both will run current games, but the 650m will do it at higher detail.

      • That 17R SE is a fantastic deal for a budget gaming laptop. You're not going to find much else in that price range with those specs, especially with a decent gpu and a 17" screen.
