If you are good at selling second hand PC parts (at least don't mind doing that), then you can do the upgrade now.
While it is sensible to wait, if you keep extending that argument, then you will be waiting forever (i.e. wait for Apple to see what kind of AI work it is doing (M4), then you want to wait for AMD's next gen CPU, and… nVidia and AMD's next gen GPU…. what if Qualcomm's ARM based CPU turned out to be too good?). nVidia is not going to sell next gen GPUs cheap. Improved Ray Tracing performance is mostly due to nVidia going all in on AI.
However, 4K generally depends more on the GPU than the CPU.
If I upgrade it'll go into my partners PC so technically two upgrades haha. PC parts don't sell in my town unless you sell them for pennies sadly
I was hoping you would give your 5600x to me.
At 4K you should spend the most budget on your GPU, a 6 core CPU should be able to handle the game at 4K.

You already got a good combo running at 4K. No need to change until the new gen comes out.
I wouldn't bother unless its $200 for a 5800X3D … sitting on a 5700X here :) will probably upgrade to a 5800X3D when the 9000 series AMD CPU's come out in the next few months and tank prices of AM4 and AM5 7000 series CPU's
AM5 Zen5 is supposed to be crazy good around 30+% IPC so I'm guessing prices of the old stuff is going to be on runout sales as everyone jumps onto the new stuff.

AMD is no longer the underdog and its market cap is greater than Intel. As much as I want AMD to be nice, I don't think they will give us bargain deals if Zen5 does provide 30+% IPS. The two Steves from Hardware Unboxed expect AMD to price the CPUs according to its performance level. They also agree with on the 5000 series X3D CPUs… at current prices, they are not getting (especially for new builds).
AMD will have new R5 8600X CPU's :) if the R5 8600X at $299USD is faster then a 7800X3D .. prices of all 7000 and 5000 CPU's will drop in price to below that of the R5 8600X @$299USD ( Expected release price )
Higher up 8000 series chips will costs heaps for sure but they need a starting base CPU at around $300.
They may do a staged release with only high end CPU's coming out first to avoid the cheaper 8000 chips clashing with old 7000 series high end.
@vid_ghost: It will more likely be named R5 9600X (better marketing, 7 to 9 feels like a bigger jump). 8000 series APUs released so far aren't game changers (unless you love setting up a PC with low TDP and decent integrated graphics). A new generation release is good for consumers as older gen will be cheaper.
Agree with you that AMD may release only the high end CPUs first to entice people to buy, before releasing R5 9600X.

Games become less cpu bound as resolution increases. 1440p there's still an argument to be made but at 4k, the uplift would be minor and only in select titles.IMHO not worth it at all @4k, I game at 4k with 3080, went from 5600 to 7600x and there's such a minor difference if any, wasn't worth the cost ($800) of the upgrade.
In hindsight I should have just saved and added to GPU upgrade.

Could this CPU carry a GPU like 4070 Super TI, 7800xt, or 7900 GRE? I'm looking to make the move to 4k OLED with one of the aforementioned GPUs but dont want to bottleneck with this CPU
Of course it can. But at 4k, the GPU you listed will hit the bottleneck first. Ryzen 5 5600 or i5 12400f shall do the job.
yeah I dont have the budget right now for 4080/7900 xtx and above. Just praying DLSS/FSR can carry me to above 100 fps
Depends on what you're playing, but I use a marginally lower performing card (6800XT) at 4k and don't really feel the need for anything more powerful. Even recent games like BG3 and RE4 average around 90fps using max settings and FSR quality. Really demanding titles like Alan Wake or Cyberpunk with RT could be more of a challenge though.
You need to focus primarily on GPU if you are wanting 4k gaming
Also $451 for the ryzen 7 8700g.. this is about $50 cheaper than I've found in the last month or two

Worth an upgrade from a Ryzen 3600? I got a RTX 3060 TI that is great, but has been tested by a few CPU-bound games (Cyberpunk 2077 chiefly).
You wont realise just how much that CPU will have been holding you back until you upgrade (i just went from 3600 > 5700X3D and other than Darktide, every single game i have tested now runs at a pretty much locked 60fps at 4K paired with my 6800 XT)
Yeah that seems to be the consensus online, but some people have advised me that it's not as worth it with my RTX 3060 TI and resolution (I game at 1440p/60fps). So just mulling over the decision. Over bigger or CPU bound games I play would be Baldur's Gate 3, Crusader Kings III, RDR2, Starfield, and Project Zomboid (this is a surprise resource hound).

Mid tier GPUs are not going to benefit much from 5800X3D upgrade (especially at 1440p), 5700X3D would be slightly slower than 5800X3D. The main issue is that with 1440p gaming, the GPU difference is greater. A youTube video I saw showed 5800X3D + RTX 3060 Ti only managed to just get 60fps average at 1440p Cyberpunk 2077 high settings.
An unbalanced setup isn't worth it. You will be switching to further GPU bound. At this price, it is a $226 upgrade (assuming you sell your 3600 CPU, based on recent eBay sold price). May and June are the months feeBay tend to provide better deals. End of financial year coming so both eBay and retailers want to entice people to buy items.

any non-cpu bound game will not be bottlenecked by the 3600 UNTIL he upgrades the GPU
Swapped from 5700x to 5700x3d on cyberpunk with a 6600xt. Went from 85-90fps to 115-125fps. Huge upgrade for mine!
…aand got a 5600x with bent pins from smartphonestoreau. It works, $195 new last sale, YMMV on the seller
