  • Just want to ask do I need this one for minor DIY? I have lots of Hex key from IKEA. They worked and no problem for me.

    • +5

Yes you need them. I've survived for years on my IKEA mystery bag. These are so much better and a pleasure to use. I didn't think I could fanboy over hex keys, yet everytime I use them I look at them so proudly, they are awesome.

      • Yeah I’ve got the stainless steel, very handy. Which do you have?

        • +2

I went with the colour ones just for easy identification, they've been flawless for me so far.

    • +1

No, they might look nice but they are not that good either.
The plastic that covers each key is relatively delicate and will scratch/damage if a bolt is tightened and the plastic contacts an edge of a relatively hard material.
This results in the allen key being hard to put back into the holder, and can sometimes result in the plastic no longer being stuck to the steel allen key.
The set is fine, just need to be careful that you don't ruin the delicate plastic. Otherwise things get annoying…
I would recommend the stainless steel version over the more expensive one.

      • Stainless is softer. You should only really use that if you have stainless fasteners etc. Even then you just have to be careful. Its cheaper to replace a rounded off fastener than a tool.

        • Guess it depends what it's rounded off in though..

    • +1

I haven't used the Wera specifically but a nice organised good quality allen key set is a game changer. I had a tub of random IKEA ones, cheap Craftright sets picked up over the years etc and it was a nightmare. Picked this deal up https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/819760 a few months ago and have since got rid of all the other keys. A metric and imperial set of GOOD quality keys, never need another one again

      • Bondhus - Wish I'd known the brand name! I must have flicked past that deal thinking it was for a noname brand especially at that price.

    • +6

The rounded key at the bottom makes your life 99% easier in tight spots

      • +2

        This is the way.

    • Does a peacock need all its colourful feathers? Technically not.

But it wouldn't be able to get as much peahen leg without them! Peacock global fertility rates would drop, population numbers would plummet, sending the whole species into the 'endangered' category in the process.

You don't want that fate, so I'd say, yes, you need this colourful set of hex keys.

  • Nice set, the hold function is quite unique.

    • What's the hold function?

      • +1

It has a spring loaded ball bearing at the end which will hold the bolt on to the key.

  • Just FYI,

The multicolour L-key set weighs over half a kilo (0.65kg).

Otherwise…wera tools are awesome in general.

  • +1

Got the multicolour ones a few months ago, Great set. I am a farmer and have used them pretty heavily and have yet to break them. Have gone through multiple kincrome sets from rounding or breaking them. Have ordered the stainless set now as a spare

  • How does the Amazon basics compare?

    https://www.amazon.com.au/gp/product/B0776C2D6H/ref=sw_img_1…

It's currently out of stock but available for purchase

  • @RichardL Another potential for the list - The Wera 8004 A ¼" Ratchet is $36.36, not an ATL ($29.99 back in 2021) but still a decent price.

Not explicitly listed as a sale item, but looks to be significantly cheaper than local offerings ($70+).

  • Newbie question: from the longevity point which is better? The stainless steel version or the chrome-plated version?

    • -1

Stainless steel is soft. Unless you specifically need it, just go the CR-V and it will last forever.

      • Ahh thats not true..

        Rockwell rating Chrome Plating: 68-72
Rockwell rating for Stainless Steal: 96

While chrome steel is hard and dense, stainless steel stands alone as one of the hardest and strongest metals next to carbon steel.

Stainless steel is more durable than chrome, offering corrosion resistance as well as scratch and tarnish resistance. However, this is somewhat dependent on the environment, as this metal is not completely immune to all stains or even wear and tear.

        https://www.metalsupermarkets.com/chrome-vs-stainless-steel/….

        • I said Cr-V not chrome plating.

          • +1

@stumo: Ok, but what CR-V Hex Keys are In Wera range are on special? All I can see is Stainless steel and those should be out shined by CR-V. Not trying to have a go at you, legit question.

        • Stainless steel is not hrc 92 buddy… stop going to random websites.

    • Stainless Steel is better, see my response the @ stumo

Essentially the same thing for $5 on Aliexpress: https://vi.aliexpress.com/item/1005005245776258.html

    • +1

No mention of what grade steel that is, presumably quite poor and will round off.

      • -2

Agreed, but you could replace them 7 times for the same price.

        • You don't buy tools to replace them. Batteries or power tools maybe fair enough but not hand tools. The amount of time spent returning, replacing and purchasing is more expensive in my opinion

        • Do you seriously think that because they are also colourful, that they are "essentially the same thing"?

Tools like this rely on a high degree of precision in addition to the base materials. If they're off by a fraction of a milimeter they're likely to not fit or to destroy the fastener. I've come across Bunnings hex tools that are out of spec.

Wera are made in Germany and the Czech Republic, and would have a pretty good QC process. Do you really think that a clone product from Aliexpress will have the same QC?

Agreed, but you could replace them 7 times for the same price.

Who wants to waste time replacing tools, especially after wrecking fasteners and and interrupting a project? I guess that approach works if you value your time at zero.

FWIW, I don't like Wera/Wiha hex tools, but I can appreciate their design and build quality.

          • @rumblytangara: All g my man. We're all learning in this life. I think there's merit to spending 13% of this for most people. These are probably great for someone building flatpack on Airtasker and using them everyday. The normal household definitely doesn't need to spend $30 on hex wrenches (in my humble, ignorant opinon).

            • @HomebrewFC:

All g my man. We're all learning in this life.

If you're learning, have you tried the Ali tools and the higher quality tools so that you have some experience to back up the claim that Ali is the same?

Building flatpack is exactly where free tools are fine. Zero precision is needed, you don't even need to use the ball heads because you stick the tool in once with easy access and just spin it.

Wera/Wiha are not necessary for most people, but neither are things like wine, movies or fancy cars. It's a quality of life thing that some people will appreciate, and nobody who has bought shitty cheap China quality tools will mistake them for Euro made ones.

Wera/Wiha is not for most people, I get it- a lot of people go through life barely touching tools. I have siblings that barely own any tools because they pay people to do all that stuff for them.

But the same applies for many of the deals on Ozbargain. There's a deal for a Brother laser printer right now- most people I know don't own printers anymore so why is the deal up? And who needs that when you can just print at 10 cents a page at your local library?

      • Care to enlighten us us on what grade stainless steel these are?
No mention of what grade steel in the data sheet or this post…
Please correct me if im wrong but your presumption is based on crap

  • amazon doesn't do credit for price changes does it after you pay more for it then it goes on Sale??

    • You could also try with their live chat, nothing to lose.

But generally, if it's not sold by 'Amazon AU' directly there's not much they can do.

  • Thanks OP

Theyve just activated these under the "buy any 2 and save 9%" promo

Just picked up these and a set of torx for $62.08 total

  • Have actually been looking for the some hex keys for home use. Already using bondhus at work and curious to try these. So ordered thanks!

  • What is the hardness of these ? Not much data that is actually useful..
