Live Connected - What's the catch?

This thread has been buzzing for quite a while now. It looks very attractive, but trying to work out what the catch is?

http://www.liveconnected.com.au/mobile-plans

Pros:

  • Optus Network
  • unlimited social (does this include the social apps?)

Cons:

  • apparently no international roaming although this may have changed
  • The call rates are a little over inflated (reasonably similar to "prepaid" rates of other companies)
  • excess charges (use software to watch going over)

Am i missing something here? It's not one of those ones where you have to dial a number and then they call back for you to dial out?

  • unlimited social

That is common in many mobile plans. It means that access to the social sites is unmetered whether via browser or app. However social sites include content from other sites, e.g. advertising, photos, so you will be charged for data from those. If the app is simple, e.g. Twitter app, it's actually more likely to not drag in all the extra content that a browser does.

    • However social sites include content from other sites, e.g. advertising, photos, so you will be charged for data from those

So advertisements i'll be charged, but general photos i will not?

      https://fbcdn-photos-a.akamaihd.net

I wonder if that is charged?

      • It depends on where the ads and photos come from. If served from a site not included in the social sites list, they they will be charged. The metering thing is based on a whitelist of social sites. A page may contain a mix of unmetered and metered content.

  • The usage is counted in buckets.
If you use your data and finish it , doesn't start using your to anyone cap.
If you finish your LC to LC data , doesn't start using your to anyone cap.
It will charge ontop of whatever plan you get. Got caught out once.
But even with that one bill was still okay.

The rest of the it is , it's optus so not as good as telstra. HSPDA speeds are okay depending on where u live, obviously not as good as 4G nor stable i get about 300-500 kbps depending on time of day.

1300,1800 included other than that i think thats about all the things i looked @ when i went onto LC

my grandfathered plan is like 10$ for 550$ it's quite alot if your casual phone user

Besides what's already mentioned, no real catch. I've been with them for a little over a year now. Can vouch for them. They used to send out Optus branded sim cards, but iirc it's now just a generic white back one.

While I haven't had to disconnect from their service, the month-by-month 'contract' gives me the flexibility to jump ship if I really have to.

  • I have my phone and my wife's with them. Really happy with them. I consider their customer service to be far superior to Telstra or Optus because you don’t have to spend time waiting in phone queue .

Converted some family and friends to them as well and all happy and everyone is saving about 80%

The catch is, online only support via their Forum.
ie it'll take a few days rather than a few minutes/hours to have a problem fixed.

    • Maybe I have just been lucky but any query I have asked was answered within an hour.

  • Which Telco/ISP most often comes up with LC in comparisons?

You need only look for that to find your 'catch'.

    • aren't most competitors running on the voda network?

      • We don't really need VF other than to highlight or justify examples of gravely poor administration.

Resellers including LC may even use the better Optus'net', but is there quality to distinguish them aside from the traditional voice call plan? I am yet to find evidence, but then I am not easily swayed by the parochial anecdote. For many, 1gb > 100mins.

  • wow, what a disappointment

    • New plans?

      • Yeah they stink if you're a lower paying customer. Higher end remains mostly unchanged I think.

Vaya.net.au look like a better choice now.

    • Disappointment is an understatement!
On my now Legacy plan ($11.99 Medium), I get more data, same calls and pay 40% less than the new Light plan!

Just saw the plan change as well. I thought their old $10.99 and $15.99/month plans were most popular amongst OzBargainers. Can't recommend them anymore.

    • :( was going to sign up 3 phones on the announcement of the new plans. Probably end up going with exetel or tpg

      • as click_it suggested above, Vaya

        • The big advantage of Vaya is that their data usage only runs 15minutes behind instead of 2 days - you can also elect to block data after your limit is reached which is a biiiig + from me (thinking of moving from LC just for this)

        • I'm on LC too and also thinking of changing to Vaya (although not for that reason). But I thought LC had a similar thing with their data usage too? They've got some kinda flash based one which runs not too far behind real-time either. They've had it for a few months from what I remember.

        • Hmm just looking at Vaya, they charge a fair bit for voicemail.
