Need Some Suggestions for A New Phone

Okay so I am after a smartphone. The current phone I have is from 2018 and is a Samsung Galaxy S8 I think, or maybe S18, who knows, but it was definitely from 2018. I'd still be keeping it if the buttons hadn't fallen out lol.

What am I after? A phone that calls, messages, has a screen the same size or bigger than my phone (as you get old you get blind!).

I also want a headphone jack, none of this wireless crap. It needs to also be 5G.

Besides that, I just want a phone that generally works well and will last in terms of quality, updates, etc., for at least 5 years.

I rarely use it besides calling and texting, scrolling facebook when bored, keeping a calendar, etc. I definitely am not one of those people that email, play games or watches videos extensively on their phone.

What are your suggestions to save me the research?

I'm definitely not wanting a plan unless with Telstra, I'd prefer outright. I also definitely am not looking at phones over $500 although may be tempted if you suggest something that is complete awesomeness. I'd rather something cheap as chips but reliable.

Cheers!

It needs to also be 5G.

Why? Seems an odd requirement considering your other needs. That limits you from ~$200 4G phones that will do all you need.

Headphone jack may need to be obtained via dongles. Again not worth limiting yourself just to have this in-built which is becoming rare.

    • Aren't they stopping 4g? Or is that 3g? As long as 4G lasts for a few years, then I guess 4G will do. Didn't think about dongles, although it's just one extra thing I can lose. Would prefer an in-built headphone jack to be honest.

4g is enough.. you got confused with 3g… get Bluetooth tws hundred deals on ozb…

    • Futureproofing. I look at my old 3G devices and wish some of them were 4G and still worked. Max budget of $500 though, probably wouldn't want to be using this phone still when 4G is turned off.

Go to gsmarena it has phone selector where you can customise features you want from your dream phone

Moto G84 seems the right fit, particularly on the headphone jack. However Samsung phones offer longer OS upgrade support if you can deal with a USB-C to 3.5mm adaptor (they're cheap and just leave them on your headphones).

Considering OP's been using an S8 which stopped receiving OS updates after Android 9 Pie, I think OP can probably live with Motorola's software support ha

The Samsung A35 is a good option when on sale as it has much longer updates and quality is good enough to last 5 years. It has a much bigger 6.6" screen compared to the 5.8" the S8 had. The only thing it doesn't have is a headphone jack which only budget Motorolas still have in the current market. Use something like this as freefall said.

    Specs list:

    • Exynos 1380
    • 6.6" FHD+ AMOLED 120Hz screen
    • 50 MP main (OIS) + 8 MP ultrawide + 5 MP macro + 13 MP selfie
    • 5000mAh battery with 25W wired charging
    • Gorilla Glass Victus+ front and glass back design
    • 4 OS updates and 5 years security updates

Currently $477 from Bing Lee eBay using MAYSAV if you need it now. RRP$549.

Cheers. Maybe I can get a dongle or just join the masses with these wireless earphones! I just hate how they fall out of your ears. My wife spent $200 on a pair and they don't sit in her ears properly and thus were a waste of money.

There’s lots of reviews on how headphones fit. Best bet would be to buy from a place that has a good returns policy. Price is not indicative of fit.

      • Or just get wireless headphones?

none of this wireless crap. It needs to also be 5G

    Ironic.

    • Similar to a convo I had with a boomer relative. Absolutely refuses to give us their home landline…..uses a cordless handset.

  • @stormster if you want the G84 for a very cheap price it's $299 at Bing Lee on order https://www.binglee.com.au/products/moto-g84-5g-6-5-256gb-50… . If you don't need the phone immediately, wait for EOFY sales
