Discounted Driving Lessons (L to P) in SYD

Dear OzBargainers,

I've been looking for cheap driving lessons around Sydney CBD or eastern suburbs for weeks. I do not want to take too many lessons; just one or two 2-hour sessions will be enough. Previously, Livingsocial had a deal ($25/lesson) but I missed out. Do you guys have found any bargain on this? Much appreciated!

You're almost definitely not going to find someone who will teach you for $25 for a two hour session, especially not a good teacher.

The petrol used during the two hours of driving will likely add to more than half of that, and that would mean the teacher gets paid less than $6.25 an hour for his teaching (not accounting for depreciation in car value due to mileage, etc.)

I know of a few good teachers who used to charge between $40 and $50 an hour, which during my time of learning was a really good rate. If you're fixed on looking for a cheap rate, then look for instructors who live in the 'burbs, as everything in the eastern suburbs will be overpriced. In particular (if you're willing to travel), Hurstville, Burwood, Auburn, Granville, and other similar ethic-centric areas will have cheaper instructors.

Since you're only looking for 1 or 2 lessions, I would much rather have a good teacher show me the tips on how to pass the P's, then a crap instructor who doesn't know what he/she is teaching.

Remember, the P's is like your HSC - you can learn as much as you like about driving, but it won't necessarily help you pass your exam. However, if you learn a few specific techniques (eg looking over your shoulder even when you're entering a lane that just formed, or stopping behind a car at a distance where you can see the bottom of the back wheels of the car in front), you can pass the test a whole lot more easily.

    Oh, and lastly, good luck!

    • Thanks a lot Eivad! There were cheap deals but they usually offer only one session for each new learner, which is exactly what I want. However, if there is no longer such deals, I have to go for higher-priced ones, which may be better though.
