Best current deal on PS3 - Ideal price?

Thanks ozbargainers for all the previous replies of my question http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/84805#comment-1106497.

I have now decided that I will get the PS3 and need your help again. There are a lot of deals going around on PS3 at the moment (I have only searched on lasoo), but what is the price I should aim for? If I only wanted the console + may be 1 game. Also, how does the hard disk work? Do I need to buy a separate disk? And how is it useful?

You don't need a separate disk. The storage is used for:

    • Music/Movies you download or copy to the PS3.
    • Any TV recorded using PlayTV
    • Any DLC for games
    • Game install files (Important!)

The last one is the catch. Many games install huge amounts of data even when playing them from the disc. For this reason alone I recommend NOT getting the 12G version. Anything larger than this should be fine.

    • Thanks Bruce (you are not Bruce 'the batman' Wayne. Right? :)

In reference to the last point, does the PS3 come with hdd's bigger than 12 GB? Does it matter if I get the 12 GB version and add a portable hdd to it?

      • It definately does. Even the very first PS3 was 20GB, and it now goes up to 500GB. I have a 40 and I find that is enough. Current models are 12, 250 and 500.

Use of portable HDs is limited. I'm not sure if you can install games on to them, and even if you could USB would probably be a big issue for them.

        • Oh, thanks for all the knowledge sharing. I think I would go for the 250 GB model now. Can you please tell me what is the price I should look (hassle) for? Is $250 the right price?

        • I'm not sure on prices. Kogan lists it for $280, so that is a starting point. Note that the previous model is still around ('slim' rather than 'super slim'). The previous model works just fine, but be aware what you are buying, you might get a better deal on old stock.

A proper PC. My $500 GTX 680 is faster than a PS3 and 360 combined. Look at your PS3:

    • Glitchy games - look at Black Ops 2 and Skyrim
    • Rubbish draw distance
    • No DirectX 11, forget tessellation or HBAO or anything that looks good
    • No native 1080p, not even 720p, DVD res
    • Blurry horrific textures with no or very limited AA and AF
    • Horribly nasty shadows and assets
    • Texture pop in

    etc etc etc.

    • First up, I'm very much in the PC camp, but that is not for everyone.

Glitchy games - look at Black Ops 2 and Skyrim

Don't know about Black Ops, but Skyrim is hardly not glitchy on PC. You do get patches a little quicker on PC, but this is dependant on actually patching the games and having internet etc, console games are /usually/ better out of the box.

No native 1080p, not even 720p, DVD res

PS3 is native 1080p. Most games are 720p (NOT 'DVD res') for performance reasons, but some are 1080.

The rest are subjective quality measures. They are all correct, but some people really don't seem to notice/care.

The advantage you get with a PS3:

      • Cheaper
      • Easier to Use
      • Less fault prone
      • Almost impossible for a user to break
      • Serves as a DVD/Bluray player (sure a PC can, but you'ld have to move it and connect it up).
      • Serves as a PVR with PlayTV

Personally I'd take a PC anyday, but there is definately still room in the market for a console for most people.

  • pretty sure they have some form of tessallation but its so shit you cant notice

End of the day you can list whatever, but the only thing going for them is they are fairly cheap.
