Proper Last Minute Hotel Deals?

I am looking to stay or not stay in Sydney City on Thursday night this week as Hubby & I have something booked for Friday. As I am in the metro are I can easily catch a taxi or drive & park but was wanting to do something nice the night before as it is for leisure purposes & Hubby is from the UK & it would be nice to see some sights too.

I know of all the main hotel deal sites but over the years they have gone from last minute bookings to booking months in advance & to be honest the deals aren't that spectacular.

My question is… is it possible to actually get a really good deal somewhere or should I just give up & book a taxi or parking space???

Thanks in advance :)

  • Good question I would like to know too.

  • Always give them a call the hotel itself. Alot of the times they can beat the online prices and the advanced booking prices.

  • Depends on what your idea of a 'really good deal' is. How about doing the Mystery Hotel deal on the main deal sites (e.g. Last Minute). I have done it a few times knowing that i'll be in the CBD and have never had a bad hotel. The caveat is I pick 4.5 or 5 star hotels.

    • Mystery Deals were all sold out. As the rack rates are way over inflated I would say 33% off would be a good deal. Going to have my nails done whilst Hubby goes to a movie instead & will get a Taxi in the morning. Shame because it would have been nice but I cannot justify $300+ when I only live 30 minutes away.
I really do believe that there is no such thing as a last minute deal on any of these sites. It would have been cheaper to book weeks ago…

  • You are correct. Most Australian suppliers are against real "last minute discounts" believing it will cannibalise earlier bookings, and that has an effect also on cash flow. it also relates to demand vs supply. Sydney is a high demand city due to business. Other areas such as Nth Qld are very seasonal and will often have genuine discounts in periods of low demand.

However, there are some who do drop real discounts into the market place short term for various reasons. Sometimes they open the offer to allcomers, most often its via one or two channels and/or semi-closed user groups. Locating these opportunities is either a fulltime occupation or just good luck.

  • Bump: I have exactly the same question. Looking for something tomorrow night. Has anyone had any luck with this lately?? Worst case scenario I'll just get a cab home but would be nice to have a good night out.
