Who's the best to go with for travel insurance?

Hi guys, my partner and i will be going to Fiji from 20th-28th January 2013. I am looking for travel insurance to go with my package. We will both be 25 when we travel. Who is the best and reasonably cheap company to get this insurance with? I've heard of TID, but how do they compare with Allianz, Covermore, etc?

Comments

  • I've always used TID and there is always a coupon code 5-10% off. I can't remember who they are underwritten by but it could even be Allianz.

    • Do you have a credit card that has free international travel insurance?

    • Are you travelling much in the next year; might be worth getting a year long policy.

    • Are you a member of RAA, NRMA, RACQ etc; check out their insurance options too.

    • Make sure to list any expensive pieces of kit (camera, laptop etc) on the policy under specific items and grab their serial numbers before you leave; makes it easier to start a claim later.

    • Have PHI? Check out them for travel insurance too.

Have a great trip :) Organise your travel insurance early (in case you have to postpone your trip due to accident/illness) :)

  • Nope, no credit card.

I'll hopefully be travelling to Thailand mid year too and I've also applied for two nights with the Jacobs creek mystery promotion. Not sure if it's worth getting yearly.

    What's PHI?

Thanks for the tips. If I do need to claim, are TID any good?

    • I used TID with a coupon which brought it down even more. They were the cheapest and seemed to have most inclusions and allowances after searching through a lot of the others.

You will always find mixed results on reviews, thought it is worth a look just the same.

      Enjoy :-)

    • phi = private heath insurance

  • We used TID for our family trip to Japan couple years ago. My then 7 yo daughter ended up in the Kyoto emergency for a couple of stitches on her head! On our return, the whole claiming process was very quick and simple. Very happy. And we've used TID for all our o/seas trips ever since.
On top of that, I think the price is quite good too… not that we should buy insurance by just looking at its price tag!

  • Hi kimba88,

I am not sure which Travel Insurance company is better, so I always go to http://www.compareinsurance.com.au to have a "compare". They have a good cross section of insurers and just takes a few seconds to compare them base on your requirement.

    Hope this help.

Did you join just to post that comment, are you associated with the site?
It looks like it does indeed compare a decent panel of insurers (several I hadn't heard of) but I did not see covermore or TID included, nor many of the major health funds or general insurers.

      • Yep, signed up to share my experience. I’m not associated with the site, it’s just one I came across when looking for travel insurance. My point is that it is worth getting quotes to compare. Couldn’t remember exactly who was and wasn’t listed.

  • Google Allianz for product reviews. Bad when you want to claim apparently. I opted for Great Lakes underwitten policies because of that for my upcoming trip.

    • really I've had no issues with 1cover (allianz) their call centre/claims processing is in Brisbane. Always quite good.

Op I would personally just go with basic cover with decent medical cover. Fiji's fairly safe, and a lot of the clauses in travel insurance make it quite hard to make a claim (e.g. lost items must have to be stolen from your person, travel delays are 6-12hrs, etc) which personally I find a waste of time & money.

I take cash ($au….don't buy travel money in Oz it's ) & a 28 degrees mastercard (apply for one as they're quite easy to obtain) which I top up with cash (so it's like a debit card & no forex fees) withdraw local money at the airport.
Keep a scanned copy of your passport, contact numbers for your insurance, bank, etc in your email.

  • We used TID about 3 yrs ago when we last travelled overseas but we went to melbourne earlier this week and got domestic travel insurance and Virgin was almost half the price of everyone else with no excess! No idea what they are like for international travel ins. but worth checking out.

  • I've used cover more (4 times, claimed once), happy with them when I had to claim, however I wasn't fully covered for an item that was very expensive.
I was told by the travel agent the cover included full cover for the item, but When i read the fine print I believe he may have mixed himself up with the cover for international insurance (I travelled to the whitsundays on this particular occassion), for some reason the international standard cover is higher for some items than the local cover. I complained on my return re:the incorrect advise but the onus is on me anyway so… Bad luck for me! Gotta read the fine print.
I used southern cross insurance on my last travel based on research such as the one you are doing now. Much cheaper than covermore and standard inclusions for certain items is higher(good reviews and awarded insurance co.). I am currently in the middle of a claim, I find the process similar to covermore's but too early to say, since I've not had the claim finalised.
Make sure you are fully covered for expensive items, in my case a very expensive longines timepiece (FYI I consider a 3k watch very expensive).

    • If interested see bellow for outcome of claim with SCTI.

  • Covermore also pricematch, I got a quote from TID and price matched it against Covermore via my FlightCentre agent.

  • what about world nomads?

  • Are there any new 10% coupons with TID available guys?

TIDTHANKS or TIDSAVE = 10% Coupon

I used http://ouch.com.au (backed by QBE)

    Decent :)

    • Agreed. The only one I would use for the USA.

  • I used scti recently and had to make a medical claim, their service was fantastic and I received payment within three days of returning home. I was very impressed

  • I personally do not recommend SCTI, I believe I had all the necessary requirements to have a 'loss' covered, reported to the hotel and transport where I thought I had lost my item (when you lose something, you some times do not know exactly where, unless you get off a train for example and then see your bag etc. drive away). SCTI did not want to know about this, and the item was not covered as I did not report it to police within 24 hours, and I was not able to find receipt on time, I believe I did report to police online, but do not have a reply as I sent the police dept. an e-mail originally and i may not have filled a loss report as such.

  • +1 for TID.
The new policies are underwritten by lloyds.
I have found them price competitive considering their inclusions and paid my only claim quickly with no questions asked a few years ago when the ash clouds cancelled flights across AU/NZ.

  • I have found Covermore VERY expensive in the past.
    Medibank
Pprivate have excelent coverage for pre existing illnesses and you can find a price on their site to cover many health issues that others wont touch for very reasonable excesses

  • Hi all, hijacking this post…

Going to Europe for 5 weeks from 10/9-15/10. All my tickets and accommodation are booked with bankwest platinum Qantas card. Do you reckon I should get a separate insurance as I heard there's a lot catches when it comes to claiming from credit card? Did someone have unfortunate events where they had problems claiming from credit card, and opting for private insurance? Appreciate your input. Thanks
