What is the best (cheapest) way to get my curtains and sheers installed?

Hi everyone,

I just wanted to know if anyone can give me some recommendations on what is the best (cheapest) way to get my curtains and sheers installed. Currently I do have all of the curtains for my windows and I just need someone to quote me on the rods and rails as well as the installation.

Thanks!

  • Putting up curtains is really easy - all you need is a ladder, a drill, and a level.

There is plenty of tutorials on youtube too :)

The hardware you can get from Spotlight, Lincraft, Bunnings.

The best way to get them installed if you wish to pay is by a professional who has insurance and a warranty; Spotlight can do this service and sell you the hardware. Maybe post your region in case someone local are a more regional suggestion :)

If you're after the cheapest way; place an add on gumtree or look for a handyman/lady on there. Be wary though, if that person falls off their ladder and through your window you could be liable for a world of pain financially to fight a lawsuit if they aren't adequately insured.

    • This isn't the way insurance works. You (or your landlord) need to hold public liability insurance if you are concerned a visitor to your home might injure themselves or suffer some other loss.
Tradesman insurance is to pay you if they are negligent.
In any case, it is a silly thing in this example. Unless you are quite wealthy or insured, no injured handyman is going to sue you - what would they get from bankrupting you after the $15,000 in costs?
Anyway, assuming you have no tools or experience, the cheapest way is to ask a friend who owns their own home to help you out in exchange for a carton of beer/bottle of wine/dinner/whatever.
The tools needed (a saw, a screw driver and optionally, a drill) are very simple to use and commonly available.
If you really know nobody (I've met some international students whose friends are all apartment renters, for example) the local newspaper has advertisements in the back for local handymen. The local hardware store (better a small one, not Bunnings) would be able to refer someone too.
Or there is a business called the Grey Army that are local older people who can do handyman stuff like this inexpensively.

  • I bought curtain rails and hooks yesterday at my local hardware store that's in walking distance (I think it's Mitre 10). Just measure your length and they will cut the rails to size if need be. My neighbour drilled the holes for me, took less than half an hour to put it all up for two windows.

I agree that a handyman is the go if you don't have someone to do it for you but buy the stuff yourself before hand would be cheaper I think, then they can just install it for you.

  • Thanks all for your replies. Yes, I agree that DIY is the way to go in terms of costing. I was thinking if maybe by any chance I could pay some professionals to do it without costing too much but I think I'm changing my mind now. I did my 2 roller blinds at kitchen by myself so I was thinking if I could be lazy instead by asking people suggestions :)
