I'm helping to look out for a friend on laptops <$1000, preferably for gaming purposes.
He's looking at a minimum of 8GB of RAM and 750GB of storage space.

I've been looking out for the same thing, and saw the same deal you posted.
I also like this clearance deal from Dell:

It would save a three hundred dollars, you get a bigger screen, but slightly lower resolution (1600x900), and arguably a better gfx card (GT650M). That extra money would go towards more RAM and maybe a better drive.
I personally prefer the larger screen over a higher resolution, and was thinking that newer games will struggle to push out 1080 vertical pixels at decent frame rates on this generation of gfx cards.
Wondering if anyone had an opinion of what would be better in the long run.
