GPS at $150 range, Dicksmith Garmin 1450LMT best?

I was looking to buy a new GPS after having our last one stolen from within the car (thank god that's all they stole).

I'm considering anything at $150 or less. Is the Dicksmith 50% off deal on "Garmin Nuvi 1450LMT In-Car GPS" deal the best thing available at that price? It's exactly $149. I'm pretty new with the GPS, first one was a gift and this is the first time i'm making the purchase myself. Help would be appreciated.

If you have an android/windows/ios phone, have you considered using that as a GPS? There are reasons why you might want a separate device, but if you have a phone already this might save you some money.

  • Nah unfortunately phone is not an option, it will be for the entire family not just for myself

  • seriously, no need to pay that much for a gps now
unless u want extra features like bluetooth, live traffic…etc

I paid $140 earlier this year!

    tomtom via 220 $79

    • Agree with this. Got this tomtom today, happy with it (@ $79).

  • I've heard conflicting things about live traffic. If there are any models that it works well in i think it could be worth it. And I hope i don't sound stupid by asking this but what are the bluetooth and call functions for? Is it just so I can hear the instructions over headphones?

No, you synch it with your phone, so it turns into a handsfree device for your phone. You DO still have to tap the screen to accept a call, so it could possibly still get you booked ….. you'd have to look into that. (Sound quality on ours can be a bit patchy though.) And it will read out your text messages, totally hands free. It's very handy to have, but for $79 you're getting free lifetime maps - you'll normally pay around that price simply for one year's maps, so if you can live without bluetooth it's a pretty good buy.

And you can get an add-on device for traffic that doesn't require a paid subscription. We don't have it because we don't need it, but a friend got one on Ebay for around $70

  • hm that sounds good but looks like the TomTom isn't in stock at my local DickSmith. I think i'll go down to JBHiFi tomorrow and see if they can beat the price. If not, i'll be left with the Garmin i guess

    • If you have no luck there go to Hardly Normal. They're currently advertising it so are likely to have it in stock. They also advertise that they will pricematch, so they'll have to do it.

  • oh I hadn't realised the TomTom is a 4`3inch..i was looking for a 5 inch device

    • tomtom via 220 is almost 1/2 the price that Garmin you're looking for. After all, 4.3 inc isn't much different from 5', certainly not worth double the price. Just my 2c.

  • Thanks everyone, got what I needed!
