Cash Converters

Hello everyone !

I was just wondering if anyone has had any experience selling to cash converters ? Do they accept anything of resale value ? How do they assess what to buy and what not to buy and does that vary from store to store ? Are there any other similar places ?

Thanks :)

  • Quite recently, actually.

Do they accept anything of resale value ?

    Nope.

How do they assess what to buy and what not to buy and does that vary from store to store ?

I was recently told that they wouldn't take a number of things because they didn't have enough floor space. Obviously, this policy (and floor space) would vary between stores. They wouldn't take anything they can't profit from, either, nor things that might take too long to sell. Whatever they do take, don't expect a great deal for it, either.

Are there any other similar places ?

There might be some similar pawn shops in your area, but nothing on the scale of Cash Converters (I think).

A couple of times years ago I was taking large screen TV's in and getting fair money for them. Best part was they had intermittent faults but staff never even plugged them in to test them.

Most times it comes down to you against the assessor. You need to convince him you are needing a loan and will definitely be back to collect the goods. That way you could get a bit more than if you just turn up trying to sell stuff.

There are plenty of hock shops around and they all operate the same way.

  • Dont expect to get the amount of money you would expect to get from ebay/gumtree. The amount of money they offer you depends on how popular the item is and how many they have in stock at their retail section.

As an example, earlier this year, they offered from about $15-$20 for my 4th Gen Ipod 8GB nano - thats with original accessories except earphones (so cable, plastic box) and was in pretty good condition as I had a plastic case since day 1. They were selling pretty poor condition ones for around $60 at their retail section.

The price they offer you varies from store to store and they do check your item on google. They'll even use prices from gumtree listings to convince you that your item is worth $0.

Their retail jewellery section have a massive massive mark-up.

If you're selling a phone and you think that it's unlocked, test it yourself first before going in - maybe borrow your friends sim for 2 seconds. There's a chance they will take your phone away to a different room for a few minutes to 'test' your phone. One time the girl said my old phone was locked, when it wasnt.

Research your item before going in to see how much its worth and whether you have the time to sell it yourself for more money. Dont let them convince you. I wouldn't bother with them unless you're that desperate for money imo.

  • Would the quote change from store to store depending on the assessor ? There are only 3 in Hobart so I can try them all.

Also, does anybody know of 'Buy and Sell' ? There seem to be a few physical addresses in Hobart.

Thanks for your input everybody ! I'll keep all that in mind :)

  • They quote the worst prices, and when they sell they do it for ridiculous amounts.

I went it to sell some Xbox 360 games — they offered $25 for Halo 3 and the DVD was in very good condition too.
Told them to flap off then proceeded to sell the game on eBay for $55 — which was $5 more than I originally bought the game for.
