HSBC Star Alliance Card - Keep or Cancel?

Those with the HSBC Star Alliance card will be coming up to their 1 year Anniversary soon (mine not till March 25).

Wanted to gauge if people going to keep or cancel.

Decision based on following:

  • Card annual fee is $450
  • Must also spend $60k to get Star Alliance Gold
  • Points per month 1:1 at $3k spend then 0.5:1 thereafter
  • Due to points cap and transfers $60k gets you only 38k Aeroplane points
  • If cancel can only apply again after 18 months

  • do they waive the annual fee if you take out a home loan with HSBC?

  • They've just raised the annual fee from $450 to $499!
Will seriously now need to consider whether or not I renew.

"The annual fee for your credit card will be changing from $450 to $499. The updated fee will apply from when your next annual fee is due on or after 11 March 2025."

  • +1

My AC 50K is valid until Dec 31, 2025 although my annual fee is up for renewal next month. Super keen to cancel the card given the fee, but hoping the 50k doesn't get cancelled. Will give it a shot and report back.

    • Hi did you get to keep your 50k status after cancelling the card?

      • Cancelled my card in April. Still have my Aeroplan 50k gold status.

  • If anyone knows the answer to following question…

it appears that HSBC will NOT give you point credit or Star Alliamce $60k spend credit for any SNIPP, Paypal or Square transaction?

It look like if on your statement there is * in the name description then that is s 0 point transaction?

    Anyone can confirm this?

I been on their chat and they dont know, saying they "dont have that information"

If this is correct then I am not going to get tp 60k spend via my normal everyday.

    • What do you mean it appears? Are you not getting any points for any of those transactions? I just checked my statements - I haven't done any SNIPP or Paypal but I AM getting points on things like Square or Zeller - though these are actual terminals that a store has for purchases, just like you can get a terminal through your bank. I think SNIPP and Paypal are in very different categories - as they're a way to make payments to people or transfer to business that don't take credit cards (or a way around BPAY to ATO). So maybe they've just decided that anything Snipp isn't an actual purchase and therefore an ineligible transaction.

      • So on my statment i spent the max limit for the month on various transactions but didnt get points up to that limit.

They told me via online chat that certain transactions dont get points, a large list like Bpay, Government charges etc.

They couldnt tell me which of my transactions didnt get points. All they could say is if a transaction falls into the list of 0 points then its 0 points.

Then looking at my credit card statment I could see a * next to each transaction that was done via Snipp, paypal and Sqaure.

I asked if those are the transactions that didnt get points but they said they dont know.

So I am assuming those might be the ones?

How to work this out; I am going to put only those transactions through card for this month and see if get any points.

        Will report back next month.

        • There isn't a max limit, but after $3k you get 0.5 points per $. Exclude Snipp and paypal and see if that works out?

          • @yeahyeah: I tired to that but my calcs just dont reconcile

I am really hoping such transactions not exluded cuase going to be tough hit the 60k spend with out them.
