New digital camera

Just in time before Christmas my 2nd Olympus camera died just out of the 12 month warranty. I am really not happy with this. I am on a tight budget and only have $100,- to spend on a new camera.
It's just to make some happy family snaps, so nothing too fancy. Whatever the best is I can buy for $100,- I guess.

All I would like is a minimum of 4X zoom (not digital zoom) and the ability to make pictures of a moving object (my 3yo son really can't sit still for more than 2 seconds lol). Oh and NO Olympus ever again!!!!

I'm spewing as I just bought a new battery for it as it had to be recharged after taking a handful of photos. SO that's $25,- out the window.

There are so many different brands and all that, that I don't even know where to start looking.

Any help and input would be appreciated :o)

Cheers!

  • Anyone? Good Guys have a Sony DSC-W630 for $99,- is this a good camera/price?

That camera Sony w630 seems fine according to some review such as http://reviews.argos.co.uk/1493-en_gb/5597192/reviews.htm . Its got 5x optical zoom, zeiss lens which is already good start and adds more features for under $100. You may get it even cheaper for cash ;) I would personally try $85 to neg. as the end of the year is coming and they want to make sale.

On the other side you can score great buy in other shops too. One good one is HN, which has sellout items in the baskets. Most Canons, Sonys, and Panasonics are good cameras. I got great Fujifilm 8 months ago when someone placed three of these cameras accidently into a basket with Samsungs for $49, making the FF camera more than 60% cheaper, great buy. I would give it a shot and then approached GG with offer for the w630.

    Good luck

Officeworks also has the DSCW630 for $99.

Don't throw your defective Olympus camera out yet. Ring their warranty number and explain the problem, and tell them you will lodge a complaint with Fair Trading, then follow-up with Fair Trading.

    • Our local OW, didn't have the DSCW630 and as I needed a camera before the weekend for some birthday parties, I had to buy one last week. OW had the 630 for $118,- online only. So I assume they just waited for the Good Guys to finish their deal before they did theirs or they would've been hit with a bunch of people trying to price match.

My first Olympus died only after 13 months when I was on holidays in Europe last year. 2 Days before it died, I bought a new battery for it as I thought it was the battery that was faulty.
So when it died completely, I needed a camera rightaway to make my holiday shots. Because I had bought the new battery, I thought I'd stick with Olympus just so I had an extra battery.

Thus the 2 facts that I bought my last Olympus in Europe AND it is out of warranty, (bought it in November last year), is not going to help me when trying to get them to fix it. I don't have the receipt anymore and even if I called the shop and asked if they could email a copy of it to me, there's most likely a different warranty system over there and that will probably be used against me when trying to get Olympys to fix it :o(

does it have to be new?

    ebay.
you can buy a used branded 10mp P&S for around $30-40 if not less

    • Hi, yes new would be preferred. But I just went out and got the Sony from the Good Guys for $94,- (THe lowest they would bargain).

      Thanks anyway :o)
