Can I use travel agents (FlightCentre, StudentFlights, STA) for low cost airline (Scoot, AirAsia, Tiger, etc.)?

I have always used price match, price beat, price guarantee offered by travel agents. I printed the cheapest quote I see from an airline/travel agent and visit one of the travel agent that has a higer price so that they beat the price and give me a $20 voucher. This works for all flights from major airlines so far…

But these days, Scoot and AirAsia are now flying from SYD and my available options have changed…

Is it possible to book an international flight with Scoot via these agents (+ use voucher + price beat policy if applicable)?

I am aware that these travel agents do have some connections with these low-cost airlines.

Please share your experiance/try contacting your local agents and let me know…

The benefit of using travel agents are manyfold.
- you may pay by cash/EFTPOS and and avoid fee(s).
- you may get $1 cheaper + $20 voucher for next flight from price beat policy.
- you may use promotional vouchers to discount the cost of your flights
- you get a nice ticket folder + immigration/custom forms
- you may pay in installment and change your reservation free of charge before ticket is issued.

  • Fallacies:

    • you may pay by cash/EFTPOS and and avoid fee(s).
If the agent must incur any fees in obtaining the fare, they will pass it on to you. Guaranteed!
    • you may get $1 cheaper + $20 voucher for next flight from price beat policy.
Or they just offer you the ticket direct from the airline because suddenly it is available!
    • you may use promotional vouchers to discount the cost of your flights
Very easy for them to throw the T&C at you that limits vouchers or discounts to "packages" only, for example.
    • you get a nice ticket folder + immigration/custom forms
These days you get an electronic ticket, in your email inbox. No paper, no nice ticket folder.
    • you may pay in installment and change your reservation free of charge before ticket is issued.
You can have all of that, if you book with them the more flexible (and more expensive) fare. Otherwise they will just pass on the airline's condition of sale to you, meaning things like must pay in full, no changes, no refunds, etc.

I must say, good try though! True OzBargain spirit!

  • The agent will just tell you book with the airline themselves if they can't find it cheaper, and they'll probably hate your guts for wasting their time.
