Best Value SSD

I need a 128GB SSD. I been trying to follow the SSD market, but its hard to keep up with what's what. I know that prices have been coming down heaps lately which is sweet. I don't mind waiting a couple of weeks for the next good deal to pop up on ozbargain. I don't need a really high performance one, just a basic one that will give me a nice speed boost over my 5400RPM.

I just don't know which brands are the one to look out for on special, which ones are the really high performance upper class ones, and which are the dodgy ones to stay away from. Can anyone help?

  • I like Sandisk for value. If you want no-nonsense reliability go for the intel 300 series, but you will pay a little more for the name. Keeping an eye on the deals here and the comments is always a good idea.

Also, just FYI 240-260G drives have become more cost competitive.

  • I like the Samsung 830 series for value. It also has a no-nonsense reputation for reliability like the intel, but is as fast as the intel 520 for the price of the intel 330.

    • Yeah i seen the samsung 830 come up a couple of times now. Do you know what the deal is with the 840? I heard about it recently i think it is the next model up or something, but i heard it is not as reliable. Do you know anything about that. Is the 830 a discontinued line or are they still making them?

The 840 will replace the 830, but don't be afraid to take a good deal on the 830. Not sure about 840 reliability.

        • 830 > 840

      • You can still get the 830, but I assume it'll be replaced by the 840.
Anand reckons reliability should be fine, judging from the 830.

  • The 840 is a generally slower in some areas but faster in others compared to the 830. Avoid. The 840 Pro is what you want for a new SSD. I personally bought an 830 a few months back (256GB) and its been flawless. Avoid OCZ period though. Like AMD, its uncertain if they will actually stick and their SSDs are rubbish.

From the SSDs listed here on OzBargain, I'll generally go for:

    • Intel SSD 520 or 330. Intel ones do attract a premium though especially 520.
    • Samsung 830, 840 or 840 Pro. A bit hard to get a bargain 128GB 830 now as they are phasing out. 840 Pro is also quite pricy.
    • Crucial M4. Oldie here but quite stable.

As @ethereal88 mentioned, avoid OCZ. The newer Vertex 4 might be fast, but I guess too many people had bad experience from older Octane/Petrol.

    • Cheers scotty and others. That's exactly the info i was looking for.
      Legends.

  • What about kingston? No one mentioned kingston. Are they on par with Sandisk?

    • Kingston seems to be a budget brand, never seems to do as well as sandisk/samsung/intel in tests.
