Apple MacBook

I need a budget macbook for a mate of mine who's a bit of a musician, plays with garageband, mixes songs, etc.

I just saw the deal for the refurb 2010 macbook and nearly got that but from the comments apparently its not that good of a deal?

So any better ideas? What specs am i looking at needing?? I'm guessing core i5 with 4GB or 8Gb RAM will cut it? Its very hard to find any deals on apple products coz of the way they control their prices, but it doesn't have to be brand new it can be refurbished. But not 2nd hand.

Can anyone help?

I think the linked refurbished MacBook is just a bit too old. Apple has its own refurbished section with more recent models:

    • Cheers. All over a grand tho :( Spose you get what you pay for.

  • How about going into David Jones and seeing what they have? $10 back for every $100 spent - http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/87756

  • Just make sure you get 4GB of RAM. Don't pay extra for RAM. I got a base 13" mid 2012 MBP and got 16GB of RAM from the Crucial store which worked out to ~$100 shipped (and reached within a week).

    • Good point, is the RAM easily user-upgradeable on the old and new range of macbooks? Coz I can easily source and install new RAM which would save money over the RRP of a macbook with more ram preinstalled.

  • I guess it has to be a Apple?

    • Yeah unfortunately. I'm a windows man myself, but you know what fanboys are like with their apple gear :P

  • The deal you mentioned is alright in the sense it's probably the cheapest Macbook you might find. The main problem is for the same price you can get something new running Windows with significantly better specs now days. Does he need a laptop specifically (ie why not a Mac mini?)

Something like this scales in at under the thousand at $919; 17ghz too according to the url ;)
    64gb storage though, ouch

If this comes back in stock would seem like an ok deal, still over $1k though but seems reasonable bang for buck with a good screen size

  • Those deals are not bad. They're all on the Apple Refurbished site hey. Is there any way to be kept up to date when new refurbished macs are released, like can you get them to send you out an email or anything like that?
