Google Maps for iOS 5.1 or Later

Moved to Forum: Original Link

Google Maps for iOS. After iOS 6.0 Apple removed Google maps and provided a mystery surprise pack instead.
This is a free app, always will be free; so not so much a bargain financially, but a bargain for your mental well being.

Download now and say goodbye to your wonky maps.

Now, if only you could remove Apples mystery pack and jailbreak iOS 6, all would be good.

This is the new Google Maps mate, for iOS 6 users who are stuck with Apple Maps

          From MacRumors:

          1. Search google maps
          2. Open google earth
          3. Scroll down to developer and click on it
          4. Scroll to the very bottom and google maps will be there
          5. Successfully install

it is not an app..just go to maps.google.com and add to home screen.

    • Seems to me iTunes suggests it is now released in native app form, not just "add to home screen" which is a shortcut to the web app.

Victorian police should be happy now :)

It's a full app with voice guided turn-by-turn navigation.

Thank heavens! The Apple maps was an absolute debacle. I'm very reliant on the maps application on my iphone to locate places (while I'm on foot) and the Apple maps app was not ready for release IMO. You see a lot of Apple fanboys on the macrumours forums saying that the maps app is fine, but if you look closely, they're from major cities in the US. US != Rest of the world.

Thanks a lot OP for this.

    • Might want to read this as well

      http://au.news.yahoo.com/technology/news/article/-/15610781/…

Good info for all who totally rely on mapping services

      • Fair enough. :) If I needed proper driving instructions, I'd use a proper GPS. As I travel to different cities a fair bit, finding addresses/landmarks is a lot easier with a smartphone (when I'm on foot).

        • Although I think people forget, that even paper maps/directories had errors, and even road signs got switched around. And even "locals" would give wrong directions

Like everything, roads more travelled are updated and fixed more than roads less travelled, so I guess less errors in maps in New York than in Mildura.

Like the fictitious island in Google map view, we hear about errors when someone finally discovers the error… :)

        • Yup. James Cook himself charted that island in 1774, and it was on all the official charts until this year. Who knows how long it's been gone for though.

        • While I agree there are always errors in any cartographic application, in my personal experience of using Google maps and apple maps in 3 cities (metros: Perth, Syd and Melb) Google maps has always been extremely reliable and Apple maps app has consistently disappointed. There is sufficient anecdotal evidence to suggest that this is indeed the case with a significant user base.

          Ofcourse, YMMV.:)

Please note that I'm not an anti-Apple user and own a significant number of i-devices (macbook, ipad, ipod and an iphone). As a result, I expect a level of quality assurance from Apple products that Apple Maps has failed to deliver (IMO). Especially when they have replaced a more functional product with it.

  • No Ipad version?

    • want ipad version as well

    • They are still developing that.
