Sennheiser RS 120 Headphones - $129 from JB Hi-Fi

80

Been on the lookout for new wireless headphones since my Sony IR240RKs died a few weeks back. JB states it's $100 cheaper than the previous price but I swear it was $180 or so a week ago. Still, at $129, it's one of the cheapest wireless headphones around, especially for a good brand and it's RF rather than IR. Not sure when this deal expires.

  • 1) Is RF overall a better technology than IR ?

    2) Is there anything that RF interferes with in a household?

    3) Can I use these with a TV or AV Receiver ?

    • They are FM-based, so transmission is not digital. There will be interference (and hiss; http://reviews.cnet.com/headphones/sennheiser-wireless-rf-wi…).
I would expect they plug into anything that a normal headphone plugs into.

My advice is to check out Amazon UK; many of their headphones ship here, and cost way less. They also stock models we can't even get here (such as a 7.1 surround digital wireless headphone from Sony with optical input)

  • @ Mugsy
Did you buy this. If so, could you please upload receipt for price match elsewhere
    Thanks

  • David Jones are very good at that technique. "Its 50% off RRP". They forget to mention they are using RRP from 5 years ago.

  • Have one of these, decent headphones, recommended

  • OK, couple of things about these…

They were released way back in 2004. Should I be investing in such an old product?
Is there any more recent equivalent?

    Price matching:
I called three DSE stores. They refused to price match straight up. They are selling them for $249. Their loss.

Just also saw that Officeworks also sell them for $188. So work their price match, it should be $122.55
Haven't called them. Better off just going in store

  • Very good price. $250 at DSE. $188 at OW. $174 @ TGG
Here is the comparison of IR and RF

    • Thanks for the comparison.
It seems for my case I am better off getting IR ones….

Do Senheiser make any IR wireless TV headphones ??

      • My previous Sony ones are IR and the line of sight requirement really got on my nerves. Interference, likely from mobile phone usage by the neighbouring unit's occupants, was also very frequent. I'm hoping RF doesn't suffer greater interference from these sources but at least the line of sight issue won't plague me anymore. Still waiting for JB to send me my confirmation email/sms so I can go pick them up.

Price matching at OW did occur to me but I just wanted this ordered so I knew that stock is reserved when I get there… got a busy weekend ahead of me.

  • Are these RS120 or RS120 II. Most products sold elsewhere are the II.

    • Whats a good price for the II ?

  • +1

I bought the Philips digital wireless for $99 from Officeworks. I find the digital quality is better than RF. and the cupping muff sits better than the RS120.

    • Thanks for the recommendation. If the RS120 dies on me as well, I'll give the Philips a try.

  • Just for anyone else's information, I ordered recently from amazon europe the RS160 and RS180 for $140 and $220 delivered respectively. They are digital and the sound quality is excellent for these type of headphones.
    Cheers!!

    • RS160 for $140 seems a bargain.
I just tried to order it from amazon.de and its €103.35 (excluding tax) + €19.93 (delivery)
So total is €123.28 or AUD 153.55

How did you get your for $140 ?

      • I usually look through all the amazon sites - such as .uk .de .es .it - weird how the prices vary even though I assume international orders are shipped from the same location.
A few weeks ago I found the RS160 for around 90 euro from amazon.de, take away VAT and add shipping it came to around $140AU. Now it seems all the prices have gone up, and just before Christmas - what a surprise :-)
Cheapest I have found now is here:
        http://www.amazon.es/Sennheiser-RS-160-Auriculares-circumaur…
and with express shipping comes to about $157 delivered - so not too bad still.

        • Thanks for clarifying.
I have now setup a price watch on camelcamelcamel for Germany, which seems the same price as .es
Plus, I have bought from amazon.de before

  • I got the RS170 for $250 2 years ago, they were great. Technology is fine, move wireless objects away from stand. If you can get that or a model higher for less, they are a good pair to consider.

Whinges pointed out that RS180 is $220, which seems a steal.

I also jabbed in some enelopes, awesome.

  • Looked into these and the pricier Sennheisser wireless a while back. Basically white noise, interference is still an issue and the level of quality of a $400 wireless pair can be achieved by a wired pair for $100 or less iirc.
While they have there place I'd be keen if the quality was higher and wasn't plagued by issues. The RS120 in some reviews would cut out occasionally and sound like the old tv static distortion for no apparent reason.

    • After trying these, yep, when the receiver station doesn't detect sound for a little while, it decides to switch itself off and there's old tv static noise. Small issue really as it's easy to switch the thing off.

Thus far I'm happy with the purchase. Much better than my Sony IR headphones.
