Thanks Easternculture for prompting with the Flightcentre sale. I did a bit more searching and found Virgin have reduced rates considerably in Feb/March and also April. Great time to visit winter in USA.

MEL/BNE/SYD to LAX from $1090
MEl/BNE/SYD to YVR from $1350 <—- Bargain skiing! Normal 'sale' rates dont generally go below $1600!

Doesn't seem to be an advertised sale or offer. So book early because these price drops tend not to last long with Virgin.

  • $1394 ADL to LAX. Boo!! :-P

  • pretty good deal considering inflation and costs of living from pasts deals, though cattle class to LA….prepare for a sore bum

  • I see $1204 to LAX, not $1090

    What am I missing?

    • That's not far off $1090. Still seeing some $1077 fares in Feb/Mar dates from Mel to LAX.

  • I just booked Virgin

BNE to San Diego. Boston to BNE. 35-day stay in March/April. For $1140 AUD through Kayak.

I've been digging around in ITA matrix for the last couple of days. Basically this fare only works if you pair San Diego with either Boston, JFK, Atlanta, Memphis (maybe some other cities too, but those are what I found so far). Only works on some dates, so its a bit of a hit and miss searching in ITA Matrix.

    • Nice work there, Thrawn! I am going to have to learn how to use ITA Matrix now.

  • I got an email from flight centre advertising MEL/SYD/BNE -> LAX return for about $998 for travel in Feb next year. Need to book by the 18th December. Not much information - cant book online - don't know who you are flying with, but might be useful to someone??

    BNE - LAX - http://www.flightcentre.com.au/product/Los+Angeles-2576791
    MEL - LAX - http://www.flightcentre.com.au/product/Los+Angeles-2576792

    • God that's cheap! I'm pretty sure this would be with Delta.

Just a heads up if travelling with Virgin. Absolutelty HORRIBLE customer service, had a bit of an ordeal with them recently (long story) that left us $700 out of pocket because of an issue with their computers that they refused to fix or even help with (going to open a case with office of fair trading), they wasted thousands putting everyone up in a hotel for the night when the issue was resolved 2 hours later and we could have flown, lol. Very poorly managed situation.

And god forbid you have to call their contact/call centre, which is outsourced to god knows where, I think it's the philipines AND india (no contact between the two, they couldn't understand half of what I was sayin and vice versa).

I wasted about 5 hours of my saturday on the phone with them trying to figure the problem out, they told me wrong information blatently and told me to call America and also said "don't worry, just travel to LA and we will fix the rest of the trip for you when you get there, there is a special team set up for just you guys, 100% confirmed definite", well, there wasn't and we would have been stranged if we did that and to pay thousands for new flights.

ALso, a separate call same day was 30 minutes just to get an email confirmation that the ticket was changed, 30 minutes to get an email sent to us…

I had to pick up my Wife and they changed the flight she was on (she was coming from Colombia, flat phone battery etc) so I got there to pick her up from the original flight but she wasnt on it of course, they wouldn't tell me which flight she was on because it was a security concern, however I was able to just call up and change her ENTIRE flight times/intinerary while she was overseas without them confirmation it with her at all.

Dealing with Virgin worst experience ever.

If you fly with them, make sure the connecting flights on the itinerary are with one of their partners (Delta, not American Airlines) and also make sure you triple confirm everything with them.

I guess they would be OK if flying ONLY the one flight with NO connection flights at all, no bells and whistles and nothing goes wrong. MAKE SURE YOU BUY TRAVEL INSURANCE!!

Virgin's service is on par with Vodafone's reception, then they rub it in your face with a call recording at the call centre "we are commited to the best service" or some shit lol

Bottom line is, yeah they are cheaper but at what cost?

EDIT: sorry about the long post - just trying to warn people about Virgin - buyer beware.

    • I'm sorry to hear of your experience with Virgin. I had a difficult experience with Virgin a few months ago a little like this, so I can commiserate to an extent.

There is actually a small team dedicated to Virgin Australia in the LAX departure lounge, and these are the guys who can fix things on the spot. The integration between Virgin America and Virgin Australia is not great, so these guys can get you out of trouble in a pinch. If you were trying to do it on the phone, or via Virgin America, you would have been SOL.
