Got very excited for a second I thought this was the 512GB Pro version. Well I need glasses leave me alone… :)

    • I was gonna bite the bullet and buy the 512 GB 840 pro but decided against it after quite a few people complained about having to RMA them. Bit the bullet and bought the $512gb 830 Series.

    • -3

840 is the Pro version of the 830.

      • +2

Not true, the 830 has been replaced by the 840 and the 840 Pro. The 840 is actually inferior to the 830, 840 pro is better than both.

        • Well, that's not strictly true. The 840 will use less power than the 830, and it's only on sequential writes that the 830 is better…

        • +1

But from what I've read the type of NAND used in the 840 is not as good, so reliability and/or durability will probably be lower.

  • Any info on intel 510 480gb?

    • old, reliable but SLOW!

the newer 520 is not the best either

      • +3

        What's wrong with the 520?

        • Allot of users are having more problems with the 520 then they are with OCZ .. enough said.

Sorry mate, as much as I like your other posts, I have to call BS on this.

Things may have changed, but a couple of months ago I read this in-depth reliability/fault report on SSDs and it demonstrated OCZ have by far the highest RMA/return rates as compared to any other manufacturer.

Intel 520s SSDs receive the pick of the bin and have a heavily modified SF controller. That said, if I had to buy a few more SSDs it would have to be 830s (price vs performance). :)

        • +1

Full disclosure: I have an Intel 520 128GB that I paid $200 for almost a year ago. :P

        • +1

OCZ still has the most failed drives.. but a quick search on new-egg and amazon's user comments on the Intel 520 and you will want to avoid it like the plage! :)

Also a quick search on Anandtech forums for ALL the nagive experiances and issues with it from Tech users… the list is never ending! one system bulder lost 3 520's out of a batch of 10…

Yes OCZ would be the worst..apart from the latest drive that just came out… but even intel cant make an issue free SSD.. Looks like the Samy 830 is the most stable .. followed by Sandisk, intel then Plexter..

Again going from user reviews from new-egg…. failed and DOA drives.. or failed drives after 3-6 months with users leaving comments … allot of people do have good things to say about the 520 also…

        • +1

          Fair enough mate! :)

The sys builder who lost 3/10… that is freakin' crazy. For my next SSD I'm definitely going to get the 830 or even the M4 (reliability is more imp than a minuscule performance boost).

  • I thought many people are steering clear of the 840 because of numerous issues?

    • +4

Pre-release firmware, the single issue is fixed, there is no numerous issue.

  • +7

    Not pro version? No sale.

  • is this a good buy? been looking for ssd, but not sure if this is it. ive read that it only lasts 3 years.

  • what is the difference between these SSD's… i got the Samsung 512 GB ssd in the below deal(it is not having any model number).

  • MOD: Stupid question.

If you go all the way to paying for it, it come out the price the OP advertised.
    Thanks

  • HI will this compatible to iMac? I presume it will be hard to install to iMac though? thanks

    • +2

ive done it before on a 21.5 imac, you just have to buy a 3.5" bracket for it to fit into the computer

its moderate to hard, i'd say, you need the right equipment (special screwdriver)

after its installed you need to install a program to stop the fan running at full speed, eg ssd fan control

you will also want to activate S.M.A.R.T. through the terminal

      instructions are available on ifixit.com

      • SSD fan? What the…
EDIT: Never mind, It makes a little more sense after googling it, but hey Macs 'just work' right?

        • Why someone neg you? It is a fair point considering user upgrades on a mac are supported. I have a MBP and I'd consider it a design failure (very Dell-esque) if I had to resort to "short-circuit" hacks or software hacks to prevent this from happening.

  • Dang, I just bought a 128gb 830 a few days ago. :\ Good deal nonetheless

    • lol price of the 128gb 830 vs this are no were near each other… how are you upset about that!

Also the 830 Series is FASTER then the 840 series.. unless its a PRO

  • It's not taking off VAT, asking to pay EUR 290 + EUR 15,71 shipping. Can you please advise what I am missing.

    • Price has gone back up to 345.99 EUR now… Marking this deal as expired.
