The Lexus of Irons - Is it true?

My cheapie iron broke down and I wanted to get a good one cos the old one never seemed to be able to do the one thing its supposed to - remove wrinkles! After much research, I think this is close to the ultimate iron. From all reviews this thing is like a rolls royce of the ironing world and best, it both protects fabrics and gets your wrinkles out in no time!

Before I plough my hard earned moola into one, I'd like to ask the real world experts here, do you reckon this is a good buy?

  • I know nothing about Lexuses or Irons, but if you buy, make sure you get a 230V model, otherwise kablooey!

  • Thanks, I've got quite a few transformer thingies as I lived in the US as a student for a few years. But I've never had a steamer in place of an iron before and this thing intrigues me! :p

    • You've got a 1500w inverter?

      • The description says that 230V models are available.

    • But I've never had a steamer in place of an iron before and this thing intrigues me! :p

We have one (Aldi brand), and use it every day. They are great for "draping" things like dresses. The wrinkles really do just vanish!

They are useless for setting creases (pants, business shirts) and dealing with folded collars.

A decent iron like a Philips will definitely work better than a cheapy iron.

No, it's a steamer, and only partially replaces an iron. They are not the same think at all. If a normal iron won't take out wrinkles from your garment, this certainly won't either.

it both protects fabrics and gets your wrinkles out in no time!

A steamer is quicker than an iron, but it doesn't really do as good a job in absolute terms. As for "protects fabrics", that's just marketing hyperbole.

  • Don't buy this device from America - it's just a garment steamer.

Buy the same thing from Aldi or Kmart - they are $50.

  • I don't have need to plait or set creases… would this be able to replace an iron? Another one which I saw available is a Conair model:

Would the Aldi or Kmart model be better than this?

  • You need to establish whether you need an iron, or whether a garment steamer will suffice. An iron can do almost everything a garment steamer can do, but if you need an buy a garment steamer, you're probably likely to still have to go buy an iron at some stage.

  • I have a Coles iron that I bought 15 years ago.

admittedly I use it 5 times a year as I go for 80/20 cotton polyester shirts (and shake and hang them as soon as the washing machine finishes).

    but no problem with it.

    cost $12 or so.

  • Update: I bought a Lumina iron from Aldi on boxing day for $9.99. I originally was looking to let my tenant have it for the apartment, but after trying it for myself, I was surprised to find that it is a really good iron! Waaay better than my old one. Its not that big, and the steam output isn't great, but when you run it over fabric, it straightens them out without fuss which is the most impt thing for an iron to me, which it performs admirably. I must admit it was a jaw dropping moment when it performed as well as it did when I tested it on a whim.
