HDMI or Fibre Optic Cable

Hi friends, I am installing a home theatre system 4k configuration for single storey home (ceiling mount) and need HDMI cable b/w 7m to 10m.

Can you please recommend which cable I should buy (HDMI or fibre optic one and product model)? Someone suggested Audio Dimensions, but they are bit costly around $300 to $400 price. Monster Gold Premium cable is only up to 5m.

Thanks

Look at maybe HDMI over CAT5/6. Fibre probably a bit over kill and need someone probably to fix in cabling issues.

I’ve dine a HDMI over CAT that for my NVR to my TV. From the cupboard in the hallway over the hallway into the office about 5m of cable and does a great job.

Done the same thing for my Foxtel box. From the over to the hallway and then into the TV in the bedroom. Foxtel remote is Bluetooth. Then don’t need another Foxtel box for another room.

TIL that people still use foxtel.

      • Mainly for the sports and some of the American TV shows. I watch more Foxtel than Free to Air.

Fibre if the equipment specs at both ends support what you want to use over the fibre. Fibre signal degradation are so low over small distances you are using that it does not matter and there is no interference from EMF. But fibre cannot go around tight corners as it is made from glass. There is plastic fibre, but I would not get that.

  • Thanks for suggestions. In my case. Ceiling height is 240cm. Projector screen to sitting lounge back wall is 394cm, room width is 454cm. As its a single storey so ceiling has sufficient space for electrician to go above. Pls suggest the cable name?

    • Monster based on the specifications of info supplied.

      • Unable to find monster cable 10m.

        • Google tells me otherwise, but monster are a monster of a price.

If you're talking about Toslink Optical its bandwidth is constrained and unable to transfer full ATMOS.
If it's another form of fibre optic/ethernet i'm not sure how you'd be replacing a HDMI to undertake the same data transfer?

HDMI 2.1 and above will be fine. Don't bother with $300+ cables, they're a scam.

Just get a good quality 10m HDMI cable off ebay. Data degradation will be minimal.

"Just get a good quality 10m HDMI cable off ebay. Data degradation will be minimal."

Exactly what I thought at first. Got a "Monster" 10m HDMI cable (decent brand) and my projector just wouldn't sync with the Source (tried TV box, Laptop, everything). Then did my research and found out that types of HDMI cables DOES matter over 5m or more.

For any home theatre setup, you will NEED an active HDMI cable, like this one: https://www.officeworks.com.au/shop/officeworks/p/comsol-ult…

      • Yeah or something like this

Then again are all HDMI 2.1 cables "active" now.

      • Thanks mate

      • The COMSOL Ultra 8K HDMI Cable with Ethernet (10m) is likely a passive HDMI cable, although it may feature enhanced materials and construction to support high-definition signals up to 8K. Typically, active HDMI cables are used when signal boosting is required over longer distances, usually for lengths beyond 15 feet (5 meters), especially for higher resolutions like 8K or 4K at 120Hz.

In the case of a 10-meter HDMI cable like the COMSOL Ultra, if it is described as an "Ultra" or "High-Speed" HDMI cable, it’s designed to handle high bandwidth (up to 48Gbps) for 8K video, but unless explicitly mentioned, it doesn't use active electronics (like a built-in amplifier or chip). Passive HDMI cables, especially high-quality ones, are still capable of carrying these signals over certain distances without noticeable degradation, provided they are made with good materials and the quality of the components is high.

        To summarize:

COMSOL Ultra 8K HDMI Cable: Likely passive, but supports 8K video with high-speed transmission.
Active HDMI Cable: Would have additional electronics (like signal boosters) for longer distances and typically listed as "active."

  • i installed 10m HDMI inside ceiling for projector to receiver setup.

Advise - DO NOT get a normal 10m HDMI cable. Get a "active/directional HDMI cable", which is more expensive than a normal HDMI cable. I learnt the hard way by using a normal 10m HDMI cable, and then havng to rip the ceiling apart.
