Wii?

Hello :) Looking for a good deal on on the old wii console (white).

DSE has it with mario kart for $138 which is the best price I can find so far. Don't particularly want mario cart although I guess it doesn't really matter what it comes with - this does seem to be the only bundle deal around at the moment. Thought they would be discounted in these sales but haven't found anything yet.

Also, where is the best place to buy games online?

And if anyone has the wii fit plus - what do you think? is it worth getting?

Also what is the advantage of getting the new wii U? The website is confusing and we have an old crt tv (so no HD) so wondering if there is any point in the new one? The U is more than I want to spend and its for my 7yr old & she is not a hard core gamer or anything:)

Thanks OB.

I know this probably isn't what you want to hear but I've had modded a fair few of the things and I've never heard of one dying ever. Of course it's always possible but I mean I've never heard of it. I would get one from Cash Converters for $60, buy a USB HDD (you'd only need 320GB or 500GB if you really want) and just mod it. Don't get me for a pirate modding the wii is so that your DVDs don't get stratched and you can watch movies on it either on the USB or over SMB share :P which is very nice for a network media player.

    Just google complete wii softmod

also i have a softmodded wii (black) that i dont use and would be willing to sell it

  • Some general information:

1: Best deals seem to be $100ish for the Wii, and this will likely come up again if you are patient.

2: All current Wiis come with Mario Kart.

3: The Wii U has the following upgrades:
    - Better detail (you will notice this even on a CRT, though not as much).
    - New games. Don't expect anything much else to come out for the Wii from now on.
    - Tablet style controller. Gives you a touch screen on your controller to do stuff with and some games can be played without using the TV.

4: Given that Wiis are well made and the Wii U is replacing it, consider looking a second hand Wiis, I expect you might find a great deal.

5: Whether you get a Wii or Wii U, your TV may have 'composite', 'component' and 's-video' inputs. If you have a component input, consider getting a component cable (does not come with the Wii). Otherwise use s-video if you have it. The picture quality (in particular colour) on composite is very poor.

  • Even I am looking for the $98 deal for the Wii from DSE..I think the last time it came out was on 1st December 2012..hopefully the deal comes soon..

  • Thanks so much for your replies :)
I did go into DSE on boxing day but left without buying anything (lol everything i went in there for, the salesguy kept saying, nah wouldn't get that - saved me heaps;).
Anyway, now not so sure what to get. I added up the cost of the console ($138 at the moment), wii fit ($128), an extra controller ($47), a charging station ($25) = $338. Plus all the add on purchases (raquets etc) put me off a bit because of the cost and the need to store them all somewhere.
So was wondering if I wouldn't be better of getting the xbox kinect for that 300ish amazon deal, and I wouldn't need all the extras… maybe a controller? Although having a little house, not sure we would have the empty 6ft space needed for the xbox, and not sure the games would be as suitable for my daughter.
    See I'm stumped :)
Other option is as suggested, looking second hand for someones Wii set with the lot included.
Sad to say I don't know anything about softmodding, will have to have a google to see what you're on about. The guy at DSE did suggest this too :)
Ozshaz, yeah I was thinking that might be back after the christmas rush dies down :)

      • Don't worry about all the silly plastic attachments, you don't need any of them.

      • 4 Controllers is great for a Wii as many games support 4 players, so I would budget for this.

      • Wii Fit is good for a bit, but most people get over it quickly and then it is just something taking up space. I'd buy more controllers instead.

      • Charging station is really not needed. Battery life isn't too bad and you can buy batteries when they are deals on ozbargain.

      • Kinect is fine, but be careful buying an entry level xbox, I know in the past the cheap version has had painful limitations that make them not worth buying, but I don't know a lot about the xbox or that particular package. 12GB PS3 has the same problem, don't get one.

      • What I do know about Kinect is that it needs a LOT of space to work properly. If you don't have this it is not a great option.

      • Don't worry about soft modding at all. Unless you are into tech or very motivated it will just be confusing and frustrating. You'll be able to pick up cheap games for the Wii anyway because it is an old console.

In short: I suggest getting a second hand Wii and with at least one extra controllers. Ignore all the other accessories (though component (3rd party is much cheaper) cables are still worth it if your TV supports it).

    • I would suggest give a call to DSE customer service at 1300 366 644..they have an option to "Bargain a deal" which means you can negotiate with them on the phone and workout the best price..i did it once for wii when the pricing was $188. I was asking for $98 but they gave me $138 which I declined :-)..just give them a call and may be you would be lucky !!! Or ask them when would be the next $98 deal would be coming !!

Let us know the result !!

  • DSE has Wii at $99 again! Wii fit $78
    Xbox kinect 250gb $259.

  • Thanks. Yes I saw it..bought 2 for the kids.
