Very salty Woolworths Ham

By some chance did other shoppers on OzBargain buy the Woolworths own brand Ham on the bone and find it so salty it is basically inedible ..I did my usual baked glazed ham for Christmas lunch the glaze I make has no salt in it. This year I am working on a bit of a tight budget …and yes I know I am not the only one in the same boat…so I bought a half a leg of ham …which is still a massive amount of meat . I like my salt but this is just so very very salty ..to the point I am thinking of returning it

They offer a no question asked return of food, if your not happy do it.

I'd return it. Or if you have already eaten it/thrown it away, just talk to manager or people at the service desk at woolies.

I got one and had it in the fridge for a few days and the salt crystals came to the surface! Very salty. We glazed ours too but threw it out.

    Dilute it in h20.

Complain to them (and email Head Office). Changes will only occur if they get the feedback. A lot of ham gets bought at this time of year but I wonder how much actually gets eaten (by humans) ;-)

I fully intend to return the ham to the Woolworths supermarket I purchased it from…I refuse to throw out nearly $35.00 worth of Ham .. I suppose the most annoying part is that I only did the ham for lunch and no other meat as there was just my son ..daughter and myself..so it was the main meat dish

  • You can always do the Nigella Lawson Cola Baked Ham recipe too…boiling it in cola for a couple of hours before glazing & baking should sweeten it up somewhat! ;)

    • Poor woman… no one deserves to be choked in public. ):

  • You should have bought a ham from a butcher, usually much better quality.

  • check out this post for woolies prawns, i would never buy seafood from woolies https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=460270360695860&set=…

    • never buy prawns or seafood

    • @nubzy..I have contacted the customer service part of Woolworths and also sent them a copy and paste of this page….It is not up to me to tell you what to do ..but just looking at how clean the hands are in the photo it is obvious you are aware for the need for clean hands when handling food…if it is you ..if it is not you then I recon you get your friend to send the photo to the customer service people at Woolworths…..I love prawns but I wouldn't go near those one's with a 10ft barge pole….also 2kgs of prawns would have been over $50.00.. as I said in my original post I was working to a fairly tight budget …I have no idea of your financial situation and it is none of my business anyway…I think that way to often we let the supermarkets get away with shoddy produce …be it just ONE bruised apple ..it is not good enough..you have payed for that ONE apple which will end up being thrown out

      • Oh its not me, just noticed it when looking at Woolworths page and thought yuck. we bought prawns from woolworths and they were quite decent, Australian and not frozen for a change!

I have noticed a decline in quality from woolworths 'fresh' food though. vegetables go mouldy/bad within few days. I do not buy meat from there anymore.

I did the fresh and free today ..so have another ham and also my $35.00 back.. So thank you Charlie for your advice …and also thank you to the rest of you who gave me good advice and positive information

    • My nephew is a Woolworths seafood manager and his display cabinets are thoroughly cleaned and he properly trains his full-time. part-time and casual staff HIMSELF. Each employee only gets one chance after training. Steve has moved 8 or 9 staff on to other parts of Woolies or had them sacked altogether. His seafood section is a cut above other Woolies seafood sections locally. The only one on a par with his is the bloke who trained him as a 15 year old teenager working after school a decade ago.

Got one and it is salty, best ham I've had for years because I like salty.

    • I agree I like to taste salt as a distinct flavour rather than an enhancement of flavour. I only feel that way with a few foods like boiled eggs, I'm not really sure I could eat a whole leg of ham by myself though.

We bought a leg of ham from Coles last Christmas, it was salty as, this year we decided to try Aldi and again it's over salty. Whats going on? Before someone says go to a Butchers, do you really think that they buy direct from the farm or stand around at livestock auctions prodding cattle? Butchers are as variable as car dealers. Sure a quality butcher with fair pricing is the ideal, but most butchers I've been to have caused me to buy in supermarkets where I can get a good look and think without having a Butcher hanging around wanting to know if I'm taking it.

    • philart…I actually opted to have a shoulder ham as a replacement ..it was cheaper than the leg ham …but it is no where near as salty..when the store supervisor pointed out that I was taking a cheaper replacement ham ..I replied I would rather have a cheaper ham that I would enjoy
But I will give the staff at Woolworths in Booval thier dues ..there was no hassle ..thier main concern was that I had chosen to opt for a cheaper ham when I could have had more

  • We had a Woolworths brand ham this Christmas.
    I did a nice maple/honey/brown sugar/mustard/pinapple glaze.
It was possibly the tastiest thing I've eaten in awhile.
Didn't notice it being particularly salty.

  • Seems pretty clear that too salty is a subjective thing, I've had Indian friends tell me some curry spice is a joke when I'm balling my eyes out with snot dripping from the heat. It's just different for everyone.

But good on woolies for happily refunding and providing you with another ham based on ur low salt preference!

    • To be honest, IME what is being passed off as ham nowadays is actually a pretty poor impersonation of a properly brined & cured leg. That's what accounts for the inconsistency, and why butcher cured/smoked hams really are that much better!

That said, you can still get a really good result if you boil, glaze & bake even a cheap ham! :)

    • cloudy ..don't get me wrong I LOVE my salt ..but this was so salty it was hitting you in the back of the throat…my daughter who helped get the ham ready for lunch said she had to wash of a lot of salt crystals but yes the Woolies staff here in Booval are a great bunch

  • wow, thought we were just being picky - we just got a Woolworths ham and no one could eat it, it was so salty. We got a second one and it is just as bad.
