Lack of updates for Your Moto Edge 50 Neo?

Hey all,

I have not noticed any system updates come out to Moto Edge 50 Neo since I purchased it together with what looked like hundreds of OzBargainers in November and December.

At the same time a friend that is using Moto Edge 50 Pro has since received 2x updates.

When I check the versions it appears I am still on security patch 1 September 2024 and last update was when I first turned on in November 2024.

This is a bit of concern as I recall there's 5 years of updates, but if the updates are so slow, and few in between then what's the point!?

Very disappointed there's been no updates. The Poco I replaced was getting updates every 2 months.

Is your Neo on newer version, so something is wrong with mine?

Update: we have found https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/motorola-edge-50-neo/Not-reciev… to be the place to voice our dissatisfaction. Please, anyone that would like to try and influence Motorola, go here and post a message.

Update 20 Feb 2025: it appears there are 3 patches finally rolling out. 1. Security patch to 1 Dec 2024, then system patch to Android 15, then Security patch to 1 Jan 2025. I didn't see any notification so had to go into settings and get the phone to check.

Would appreciate if you can confirm below if you got the patches, and if you still does not get the patches.

Jeees that is pretty slack, mate.

  • on the same boat. All while other countries seems to be getting android 15 on the same phone…

My friend with the more expensive Moto is in AU, what prompted me to check was he was showing off his Android 15 update. So it's not strictly a country problem.

And while we're still on security patch 1 September 2024 !!!

Moto has to pick up their game or i am switching come Nothing Phone 3(a) - end of March.

    • I wouldn't wait till end of March to switch if you have high security needs. It is the unfortunate reality that a $200 or $300 phone won't have the same urgency for updates that an iPhone or pixel has.
For me, the 5 years if updates, even if they aren't super prompt, is much better value than a costly flagship device, but I don't have any security needs more than a banking app on my device.

  • Mines the same. Honestly thinking of just buying another pixel, can't stand the camera on this thing.

    • what's don't you like about the stock camera? I haven't used it much so can't really comment. The ones I took are OK for daytime shots

      • Talks half an hour between pressing the shutter button and taking a photo. Sucks at exposure even if you tap on what you want it to expose/focus on. Doesn't take multiple shots every time like pixel does. Hardly ever had a missed shot with my old pixel 5, heaps of missed shots with this.

        • definitely not a great camera but seems ok to me
          - I double shake my phone to open the camera, took about 1s ready to shoot
          - I timed using another phone. took 6.9s for 30 continuous shots (hold shutter button in camera app). my spare iPhone 8 took 3.6s for 30 shots. this is night time so maybe daytime a little faster

maybe try another camera app or upgrade to a better phone

          • @bheart: My old pixel has near enough to zero delay with the camera that I don't notice it. The "take many photos" thing may be a pixel feature, you just take one picture but it captures a tonne either side of where you actually pressed the shutter button.

maybe try another camera app or upgrade to a better phone

Tried gcam and it's too buggy on this thing. Yes I literally mentioned that I may have to get another pixel. Just weird, I checked dxomark before buying this thing and it got better marks than my old pixel, but I'm actual use it sucks.

        • Yeah well…it sounds like you definitely appreciate camera more than me. In that case you SHOULD get a pixel. The camera is a tad bit laggy but not unusable. It's sufficient for me, but as someone that feels front facing cameras are a waste of the BOM cost…

I just discovered that shake the phone to open camera shortcut TODAY! I am definitely not one that has high demand on the camera.

          • @hippo2s: Mine is set up to shake the phone to turn the light on and off. I use my phone for photos for work and picture of kids/family etc. With the pixel I didn't feel annoyed that I didn't have my dslr most of the time. With this thing I wish I had my pixel. If you don't care about the camera it's a great phone. Good size, good screen, everything works, battery is fine, excellent for the price.

  • It's disappointing since we have missed 5 months of security update now (Sep-Oct-Nov-Dec-Jan). I don't care so much for a slow roll out of Android OS but they should have released MONTHLY security patches every month

For Android 15 OS upgrade, Motorola seems on par with most vendors, except for Pixel/Nothing/Sony/OnePlus who are really quick to release upgrades.
Even for Samsung, only S25/+/Ultra got Anrdroid 15, the rest have not.

Does anyone know of a site which keep track of security update released by each vendor, or even just Motorola only? I could not find even on Motorola support page

    • I found this Samsung website where they list their security updates, apparently depending on the phone, it receives security update
      - monthly
      - quarterly (every 4 months)
      - biannually (every 6 months)

It looks like this Motorola phone belongs to the biannually, if they follow Samsung's strategy

    • What's the consequence if you don't have those security update?

They are more important (bugs and security vulnerabilitirs) than entire version updates (Android 15 is also what we ought to get).

        • The reason I am asking is because I am still using an Android 11 phone (MIUI 12.5.6) which stopped receiving updates since 4 years ago, and it doesn't affect me using it

          • @Leonard0880: Yeah, bugs doesn't necessarily directly affect all users in all scenarios so the issues might not impact you. And security…you might not 'fit the bill' for hackers to target you. It's a good thing.

Also Xiaomi has been pretty good at security patching. My Poco was only 2 months behind.

Scroll to the bottom - a reply by a Motorola employee, nothing new.

*sigh. i guess they're not interested in keeping Australian units up to date / or if what's been advised is true, meaning the official local networks hasn't responded to Moto, so they're not releasing as a result.

Sounds like common, even in India https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/motorola-edge-50-neo/Not-reciev…

I guess Moto is not really keen to release patches

    • blaming on local networks is BS IMHO. They should have just said cheaper phones receive less frequent update. Other premium phones have monthly security patches, where cheap on receive every 6 month. See my comment above

Edge 50 Neo is not a 'cheap' phone. RRP is like 699? It's a mid-ranger. It was on sale with a low low price, yes but I agree they should just be frank about it.

I purchased assuming it would get the same level of updates as their other models.

  • This phone should receive security update every 2 month!!! according to this page. They have not been keeping their promise
Note: there is no direct link, you need to click Select your product tab, then Edge 50 Neo to see.

    Device launched on August, 2024
Security updates will stop on August, 2029
    Launched On: Android 14
    Next OS: Android 15
*This device will receive at least bi-monthly SMRs updates
Please note: Channels and regions may have different launch dates and support cycle may vary.

      LOL… love the caveat. NOT!

Great find btw. I went thru the Contact Us / community selection from that link you gave and ended up at the same forum as my other post.

Can i suggest anyone that has something to say, to go over to https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/motorola-edge-50-neo/Not-reciev… and post a message. It looked like the community leader was active in there up till 2 weeks ago. Let's make it the biggest thread to get their attention.

I had the same issue, there must be something blocking our firmware updates. Here's is a solution:

Download and use Motorola Software fix to manually update to android 15. https://en-au.support.motorola.com/app/softwarefix

I think this is also called 'Rescue and Smart Assistant Tool' in other regions, not sure

During the process you can choose not to wipe the device (but good idea to backup just in case). Im now getting OTA updates to android15

    • wow this is huge. thanks for sharing. gonna try jt out. wonder if more frequent security updates will come after this

Good news, fellow Moto Edge 50 Neo owners!

The new Android 15 update has just landed on my device. It includes the December security update, followed by two subsequent patches that bring the security update up to January.

It looks like Motorola is finally rolling it out.

got a notification yesterday too. took them a while but finally delivered. hopefully it was android 15 that delayed all the security patches and we will get much more frequent update from now

  • Not a. Big fan of updates on a consistent basis. Been burnt a few times with this and yeah don't like it at all.

Galaxy note 2: upgrade. To KitKat caused battery drain so fast that in 8 hours, boom battery dead.
Galaxy tab 2 10.1: upgrade to 4.2 used virtual ram and caused massive lag issues with the device rendering it useless, went back to Samsung to complain and claim warranty and was just beyond painful to get refund.
Galaxy S5: battery drain after update, had to use custom rom to fix.
Moto g31: battery drain and lag

Thanks to anyone else that helped post messages on the moto support forums. A number of us had to threaten returning our phones. They asked for our IMEI so we thought they only released to our devices.

Regardless, happy to at least be on 1 Jan 2025 security and Android 15. It's still sad how hard we had to make a fuss before this happened (not saying it was us that did it, but the timing is too much of a coincidence).

It looked like there were three patches.

Security patch to 1 Dec 2024> system patch to Android 15> security patch to 1 Jan 2025.

Will make a fuss in future everytime my friend gets update on their edge 50 pro. ;)

Would appreciate if you can msg if you have success updates or not.

    • Hi, I bought my Neo 50 2 days back but its still on Android 14. How do I update to 15?
