Do You Need to Take Car to Vic Road for Registration

My car rego was expired and then cancelled coz I didn’t pay.

Now I am re-registering it again. It's on my name, no inspection needed. All documents are done.

A section in the email says:

Don't forget to bring appropriate tools to remove your old number plates and put the new ones on. They'll need to be fitted to your vehicle before you leave VicRoads. Note that screws won't be provided with your new number plates. Before leaving VicRoads I have to put new plates.

So that’s if am taking my car there otherwise I can go on my other car, get registration done and take new plates home and then put them on, right?

  • How many days has it been since the registration expired?

    • Its canceled. 6 months

      • Last time we enquired the car will need RWC, if longer than 12 months they need to see it in person as well.

      • To save you buying a temporary permit you can just go in another car with your paperwork (including roadworthy certificate) and pay. You can attach your new plates when you get home.

  • You need to purchase an unregistered vehicle permit when taking an unregistered vehicle to VicRoads for registration.
Then go to a VicRoads Centre.
Make sure you have a certificate of roadworthiness.
Ensure you completed the vehicle registration form.
Bring evidence of your identity which needs to include your address.
    Pay VicRoads fees.
Bring some tools to put your number plates on before you leave VicRoads.

You need to purchase an unregistered vehicle permit when taking an unregistered vehicle to VicRoads for registration.

That part is not required if you driving it directly to a Vicroads inspection appointment… (to or from anywhere else though, yes a UVP would be required.)

      Vehicles temporarily exempted from registration
Vehicles usually required to be registered can be exempt from registration temporarily for the following reasons:

      • It's being driven on a road for the specific purpose of obtaining registration. This doesn't include having the vehicle repaired or obtaining a certificate of roadworthiness.

  • Do you need to give VicRoads the old number plates?

Yes. I went to them with registration form + RWC+ two id (one with address like on license) + old plates. They took old plates and gave new one (40$ i think) + paid for rego. No need to take vehicle because it was my car and there was no inspection. But if you taking it, email says put the new plates before leaving vicroad.
