Mains Powered Wi-Fi Security Camera

I have a very good Wi-Fi setup, but running cables all the way back to a central hub isn't feasible. Ideally, I'd like cameras that can be accessed directly in Home Assistant without delays and am willing to set up my own on-site recording. Are mains-powered Wi-Fi cameras a thing? Are there any models worth buying?

I currently have old Eufy 2 cameras and am over recharging batteries. I've considered getting the v3 cameras with built-in solar, but don't think they'll give me direct feed. Also, am hoping mains-powered Wi-Fi cameras give me more options at a better price.

Not asking for much, am I? :)

Sell the eufy to me. I will plug them in at the back to mains and never have to recharge them again.

    Yes this is possible.

Or plug in a $40 solar panel off ebay and let them recharge themselves.

Problem solved. Its what i did.

    • those solar panels look janky as f

  • TP-Link Tapo cameras.

Correct, all the Eufy battery/solar units don't offer endless live steaming so getting a direct feed doesn't really work for them. You have to wake the camera to get a feed and then it will time out.

Just Google wifi cameras, just about every non battery/solar wifi cameras is mains powered and will do what you like.

    accessed directly in Home Assistant

Once you find some cameras, Google if they are HA friendly.

Reolink are and well pretty much most brands are.

  • what is the purpose of accessing directly in Home Assistant?

The idea of the home assistant isn't to look at it all day, its there for intergration and automation. ie if something happens, do this kind of thing.

If that what you want, get a camera like hikvision and access it via web link

    • The idea of the home assistant isn't to look at it all day

OP can have them on a dashboard being displayed.

OP might have automation that sends camera pictures to them.

I have a HA automation that when the old school doorbell is pressed, it pings my phone to alert me and attaches a picture taken from the camera covering the front door in the notification.

Many reasons to have them work in HA.

      • OP can have them on a dashboard being displayed

That is a useless thing, so you look at it all day? Correct way of using HA to get rich notifications or actions.
Plus continuous recording is a ueless thing unless you running a drug lab or shop front.

I have a HA automation that when the old school doorbell is pressed, it pings my phone to alert me and attaches a picture taken from the camera covering the front door in the notification.

This is what it should be used for, this is what I got. And now I have linked to Ring, if it detects animals in the garden, trigger the water sprinkler.

        • That is a useless thing,

For you, maybe they have a wall mounted dashboard that is viewable.

Plus continuous recording is a ueless

Again, that is a you view.

Just because you don't have a need, doesn't mean there isn't a need for others. Many of the YouTube HA people have camera feeds on their dashboard.

          • @JimmyF: I know it's my view, I had it wall mounted, with a video feed etc, it is just a pretty decoration to show off to someone, I couldn't be bothered getting off my couch to look at it. I'm just saying, it's not practical.

Then OP needs a possible solution on HA out of home and dealing with data bandwidth.

Live feed in HA is not as smooth as Ring/Reolink/Google apps. And for the doorbell, it's useless, not easy to voice communicate, try talk to postie to leave the parcel in the garage via HA.

Not impossible, the question is why, and is it worth it? Practical?

            • @boomramada:

the question is why, and is it worth it? Practical?

Honestly not really up to you, if the OP wants to do it, then so be it. They are the ones dealing with it at the end of the day.

Live feed in HA is not as smooth as Ring/Reolink/Google apps

Depends on your camera, my unfi cameras stream perfectly fine.

And for the doorbell, it's useless, not easy to voice communicate, try talk to postie to leave the parcel in the garage via HA.

Which doorbell? Who says every device has to go via HA?

Anyhow, you do you, I do me, and the OP does them.

Hey Google display camera one on the main TV

A few seconds later it magically appears.

Eufy E330 cameras connects to mains and allows for 24/7 recording. A 4 camera kit with homebase 3 is around $1k at the moment.

    • I have a E330 alongside my S300s and it's a much better camera, wider angle, better night vision and allows for 24/7 recording (if you have you're Homebase with a hardline connection)

There's plenty of options. Wifi cameras. Just dont get battery operated ones.
