Sydney Tools - Discounted eGift Cards or Alternatives

We buy quite a large volume of stuff from Sydney Tools on a semi regular basis (quarterly or so).

Was wondering whether there are any of these portals (HCF , Bupa etc) that provide discounted Sydney Tools egift cards

Alternatively are there any other ways to get some form of discount on the purchases. Something like the Tradie Visa cards or similar cards that can be used at Sydney Tools?

I realise Total Tools is part of the Ultimate gift card series and they often have 10% off those cards, unfortunately we have to use Sydney Tools as they only stock what we need

Any suggestions - even getting 5% discoint would be awesome

Thanks

  • They have their own cashback system which will be far less hassle and risk of gift cards or other avenues if you can organise your orders within those 'trade night' timeframes: https://sydneytools.com.au/assets/images/banners/1/1/1/8/111…

    $200 back on $1,000 purchase is 20%.

    • Yeah unfortunately only some of the items purchased are applicable for those bonus points, and also cant really time the purchases to coincide with the 20% off (wish I could)

Presuming you are trade based business with ABN?

    • No not a business, do businesses get better pricing?

      • Most of the time, yes. Just having an ABN as a Sole Trader gets you benefits. I have a number of trade accounts and get much better pricing, including Bunnings PowerPass. I use both for personal and business benefit. Bunnings at times is only 5%, but is still a saving!

Some businesses will only deal with you if you have a business/ABN. There are a few that will not deal direct to the public for the 1s and 2s.

        • What they said ^

  • unfortunately we have to use Sydney Tools as they only stock what we need

What are you buying that isn't available elsewhere?

  • Maybe instead of considering discounts, look at ways to earn points like via CC points or similar. Get benefits in otherways rather than discounts.

Im trying to double dip - buying the egift cards using Credit cards for the points (wouldnt do it direct as ST charges AMEX surcharge) and also then getting a slight discount using the gift cards

      • Yeah okay, thats fair enough.

Having searched Google and some member-only gift card portals (e.g. Reward Gateway, HCF Thank You), it looks like the only official way you can purchase a Sydney Tools gift card is from Sydney Tools themselves.1 In other words, it looks like Sydney Tools does not run a discounted gift card program.

If you want to be saving money via gift cards, the only option remaining would be to use prepaid gift cards that work at Sydney Tools. There are two main types that come to mind:

    1. Prepaid gift cards that are not restricted to specific merchant categories (e.g. Coles Mastercard gift cards, Vanilla Visa gift cards). This is probably not the best option at the moment, particularly since deals on open-loop prepaid gift cards have dried up at the moment, plus they usually max out at $250 or $500 (which may not get you very far at Sydney Tools).

    2. A restricted prepaid gift card that works at the merchant category code (MCC) assigned to Sydney Tools. I have no idea what the MCC is, but considering Sydney Tools is a retailer primarily selling tools, it should be MCC 5251 (Hardware Stores). Assuming MCC 5251 is the correct MCC, there are two main types of prepaid gift cards that could work:

    • Category Choice Tradie & DIY gift cards (and its cousins, including the Cashrewards Tradies & DIY, ShopBack Tradie and Zip Visa Tradie).
    • Category Choice Department Store gift cards.

These two Category Choice gift cards very infrequently go on sale through a handful of gift card portals (e.g. HCF Thank You), but the Cashrewards Tradie & DIY and ShopBack Tradie gift cards are sold with 2% cashback everyday.

I suggest you also keep in mind the following:

    • I have no idea whether Sydney Tools accepts prepaid gift cards as a payment method. This is particularly important if you are paying online and not using Apple Pay nor Google Pay at checkout, as there is a chance that the Sydney Tools website uses 3-D Secure2 when you use the Credit Card option on the checkout page.

    • If you are shopping in-store and need to use more than one Visa card as a payment method in the same transaction, I have no idea whether Sydney Tools will allow split payments (and if so, whether there is a maximum number of split payments allowed).

I will leave it to you to decide whether 2% cashback is worth it for the extra effort.

    1. Google showed me some results from random gift card portals overseas that I have never heard of before, but those do not appear to be official resellers.

    2. If you do not already know, 3-D Secure is where Sydney Tools' payment processor requests your financial institution to verify that the registered cardholder is the same person who is attempting the purchase. You as the customer would experience this when you are asked by your financial institution to provide a one-time password received via SMS or email to authorise an online purchase.
