Not sure about a mattress under $500, but I have a King Koil and it's great!

  • Depends on what you prefer, one person's likes are another's dislikes. I have a King Koil. I'm happy with it. You do tend to get what you pay for and I'm not sure that a mattress under $500 will last. Suggest you turn the mattress regularly if you are buying cheaper. I'm told it extends the life of the mattress.

I can recommend you stay away from David Jones - even when on sale (especially when on sale). When my parents bought a new bed from them, they failed to deliver and left them with no bed for the night (the other was already moved out). They said it wasn't their problem since they weren't picking up the bed (my parents were giving it away). DJs charges to take the old bed away. My parents were around 80 years old at the time and it was the middle of Winter. I found out and at the last moment was able to arrange delivery, but DJs sent a courier instead of the regular deliver/set up people at 7pm at night. They didn't set it up, didn't even put the wheels on (they didn't think it had any) and left the bed and mattress wrapped on the floor. There was no one available at that time of night to call at DJs and the warehouse bloke loaded it then left straight after. The plastic was so dirty it marked the carpet and then the bed wasn't even finished properly - threads hanging out the pillow top. It didn't end there, it took about 4 deliveries to get a bed that had a half decent finish, and even the final one wasn't finished that well but they got sick of having the hassle. If it was a cheap bed it would have been expected, but it cost thousands and was top of the line. The staff just didn't care if they left elderly people without a bed, they already had their money. Talking to customer service was a waste of time and the managers didn't care either. It was a disgrace. I haven't bought a thing from David Jones since.

I know Harvey Norman is often unpopular, but we have had good service in delivering on time and as arranged. If they are local to you its better too as you can go talk to them if there are any problems. I've found King Koil to be an approachable company. When a wheel came loose on my bed they sent someone out no problems. Good luck.

  • If you live in Melbourne there are some wholesale mattress shops around. Friends of mine bought from a Mattress place at DFO Essendon and got a real bargain as well as a quality mattress. My suggestion is to stay away from the big brand stores as they tend to have higher mark ups.

  • Is $500 a price you've allocated, or all you can afford?

Cheap mattresses might not last for more than a few years and then you're stuck having to get another one - not to mention not the best nights sleep - potential back/neck problems and so forth.
After a LOT of research about 10 years ago we bought a natural latex mattress (not manufactured, not latex layers with memory foam etc - just 100% thick natural latex). It was pretty expensive - $2000 from memory, for a queen size, but it's still as good today as when we first bought it. It came with a 20 year warranty - but they said really it will probably last another 20 years on top of that.
We've found it super comfortable and my neck problems have greatly diminished. Latex is great for people with allergies/asthma as well as dust mites and bugs can't live in it either so it's healthier as well.
To my mind it was better value getting this mattress than a cheaper one - but of course this is just our personal experience. Hope it helps

    • And where did you find that kind of mattress? What do you mean by "not manufactured"? Is it a custom hand made by some artisan?

      • Synthetic (manufactured) latex is cheaper than the natural stuff and is a blend of other stuff too.
I went through these guys - http://latexmattress.com.au/ who have lots of info on their site about the differences.

Just went to their website to double check and they have 30% off sale currently - which is great and they ship all over Australia. And no - I'm not affiliated with them in anyway.

I've been pretty happy with them, and bought a single since my original purchase, and 4 latex pillows (and this was without the discount - hmm, maybe I'm not so happy anymore - just kidding)

  • Saw this online, not sure if it is good but it is close to your budget…

  • My wife and I were looking for a good deal in latex mattress and went with the Queen Zaanta: http://www.zaanta.com.au/category_s/1823.htm

Very affordable and natural! If the mattress works out too expensive, you could look at the topper pad (http://www.zaanta.com.au/category_s/1824.htm), which is a thin (5cm thick) latex layer that lays over your existing mattress. Not as great as a latex mattress, but still way better than your standard mattress.

Hope that helps and best of luck!
