In terms of the timeline, Kratos has like a multiple decade gap where he leaves Greece and ends up in the Nordic world(s)
So if they wanted to milk his legacy they have the potential to do it, although I don't the current devs have any intention based on what we know.
Honestly, I hope they provide the reasoning.
Maybe the Norse are after him after he married his wife, and he has to get away from them during the events of the game, culminating in his wife’s death and the retreat of Keaton and Atreus into the wild with her corpse.
