If its only open to people in the US then its not legal to download it so what's the difference between this and torrents ?

    • Amazon has its benefits, many ways to work around it, call it a glitch… :P

amen brother…you have your head on straight.

Would this logic (obtaining a benefit despite stated geographic restrictions = illegal) also apply to the use of freight forwarders?

the legal side is very complex and has many arguments but at the end of the day its dishonest and the copyright to offer this for free is not vaild in Australia. So if someone was going to buy one of the songs but got it free the artist and related people miss out on a sale that they didn't agree to. Same as torrents. I just don't see the point of using amazon to be dishonest.if you happy with dishonest get your free music from the p bay :-D

In my opinion, if the copyright owner is going to allow something to be distributed for free, they should allow everyone to download it, not just white people, not just straight people, not just people living in America. Therefore I believe that it is not dishonest to work use a VPN. Especially since your visiting the country virtually, which makes it legal.

Torrents are completely different, the copyright owner gets nothing if you pirate, unlike when you access Amazon via VPN, as the copyright owner gets the same amount as if you were to take a plane and go to America.

Who cares? Amazon gets a 'sale', the publisher gets a 'sale' and most of all, the artist gets a 'sale'.. the only one that's out of the loop is the local distributor/publisher and as far as I'm concerned, the less sales they get the better..

We all certainly need to cut the local guy out of the loop, even if that means bypassing geo IP restrictions.. it might actually force them to either not bother selling here, or come back to the bargaining table and start offering 'reasonable' prices..

  • Makes zero sense linking the GO TO DEAL button to Amazon home page. Link it to the supplied MP3 link, at least.

    This would be subverting copyright.

    • What about if you fly to USA and then access Amazon? How is using a VPN to visit USA any different to doing it physically?

I can buy PC games from Amazon with US address but not MP3s - "We could not process your order. The sale of MP3 Downloads is currently only available to US customers. Please refer to the terms of use of the MP3 store to determine the geographical restrictions. "

  • Amazon has had free music for a long time so I'm surprised with the tone of this post. The US address only is a new one for me as it wasn't the case in the past. Over the past couple of years the free music has often been samplers - which has been a great way to get exposed to new music. Without it and the likes of puto mayo or record company samplers such as spunk records release it can go unnoticed what great artists are out there.

  • lol, one of the 'albums' is a 6-second Hunger Games Mockingjay call :P

I've known about this for a long time, and its certainly nothing new, but I don't think its been posted on ozbargain, so fair enough. In my opinion geo-restrictions should be illegal, its discrimination by location, and unfair. It's not Amazons fault (they simply couldn't get the distribution rights, but the companies are just too greedy.
