The price is amazing, passive tv is a big bonus to those that aren't too bothered by the quality. I know I wish my tv was passive because dispite the quality drop off at least you can get spare glasses for $2 for the cinemas if they break over $70+ for your other brands.

It also means you can afford to have more than 1 or 2 people watching at a time. Not to mention the possible damage (I don't believe that any study's have been done) that shutter glasses could have on children's eyes.

Postage for me would be ~$36 so total price is $735.

obviously different by state, to adelaide

wow. I can't believe how cheap TV's are getting. Not sure how good a Kogan is but at this price sounds like a deal ! If anyone has a Kogan and has had Sony etc can you comment on the quality comparison for us ?

    • This is exactly what I want to know as well. How would this TV compare picture quality wise to something such as a Samsung UA55EH6000MXXY, Sony KDL55HX650 or LG 55LS5700. I know the Kogan is much cheaper ($300 cheaper than Samsung http://www.jbhifi.com.au/tv-lcd-led-plasma/samsung/55-inch-f… ) but I would rather pay a little more to make sure I get a great picture, not bothered about 3D much.

      • +2

Don't get a Kogan TV. I owned one. I gave it away (for free). It is so bad that it is just wrong to sell it to other people (even for $1).

I will NEVER buy another Kogan TV (remote interference, poor HDMI auto, poor 60Hz support, lack 1:1 pixel mapping or full scale mode). Please buy a well known brand TV.

        • lol @ wrong to sell it

          serous its that bad?
          What model was it?

  • +1

why always the eek in the subject? and "hope the quality is OK! I've heard mainly good things"? why the negativity i dont get it?

watching mine as we speak from the last one you posted ($750). after upgrading from my ~5 year old no name 50" plasma so far im quite happy with these.

sure the speakers dont sound as good as my yamaha home theatre but you would be mad to even make a comment about the SQ on a cheap tv. ive never heard a tv i like the sound of and im sure somewhere near 99% of people buying a bigger than 40" tv will be (or should be) hooking up to external speakers anyway.

anyway good deal for a cool tv.

    • +4

Yes, exactly, some people expect 10mm thin TV's with huge speakers.
There's just nowhere to put them :)
Use an external amp please people!

      • +2

Does anyone use LCD television speakers? Always use an A/V receiver or amp.

        • +15

NO WAY, I only use Plasma television speakers

you're on ozbargain mate, of course people use television speakers

        • +1

if your a true OzBargainer you jump on one of the many cheap 5.1+ amp/speaker/system deals that have been posted specially over hte last couple of month and join the rest of us ;P

I'm still waiting to pounce, they could get cheaper….

dejavu samsung galaxy s3 still dont have one haha, when it's $450 i swear…

        • +1

Or get a cheap quality second hand amp. Audiophiles like to upgrade.
Very cheap if you can cope with s/pdif instead of hdmi for audio.

        • if you can cope with s/pdif instead of hdmi for audio.

actually i couldnt get the spdif working on this. 2 different yamaha amps which are both running spdif fine (one on this pc via coax and previously on my old tv with optical) wouldnt work with this tv. they also have no optical out only coaxial which somewhat sucked, for my setup anyway.

they also have no rca a/v output so for me it was really a case of needing a hdmi capable amp.

but none of that really bothered me to much really, ive been wanting to update my 10 odd year old amp for a few years now just had no excuse.. err.. reason to caus it still did everything i wanted from it.

        • $418 for a Yamaha HTR-6065 was my reason for an upgrade, thanks to Ozbargain.

        • +1

I use the TV speakers on mine when im not watching movies. Class AB amps will suck 100w off the wall… and thats only on idle.

        • They "will" get cheaper :)

        • actually i couldnt get the spdif working on this.

Bummer, but stereo analogue is good enough for TV, isn't it?
So long as you have a digital connection to the disc-player and HTPC, you are set.

they also have no rca a/v output

          What about a headphone socket?

Reckon the eek is for Kogan not the product. They're post sales customer service sucks big time! Yesterday their call centre was closed according to the recorded message and then advised their hours were mon- fri 9-5 aest. This wa at 11am thursday. Pathetic.

      • That's disappointing. I've been tempted to buy from Kogan but after hearing that I think I'll give his products a miss.

        • +2

After hearing the thoughts of a single person about difficulty getting hold of a call centre you no longer want a product.
Yesterday was 03/01 many work places are still on holidays and while the message should have been amended I hardly think it's deserving of causing someone else to not buy from them.

On the same note you must not own a phone because Telstra, Vodafone, Kogan Mobile, Optus and so on all have call centres that are difficult to get a hold of and are not always helpful.

On a side not Kogan also has email support.

"why always the eek in the subject?"

His house is infested with mice.

    • I believe the comment on sound quality is worthwhile and would contribute to someones decision when considering this.

The "Eek" was also part of the email subject that Kogan sent around. :)

The "Eek" was also part of the email subject that Kogan sent around. :)

ahhh well that explains that then. i thought it was just the OP commenting on it being a kogan, hence why i asked :)
        thanks

      • Ah, Kogan's a man who knows the state of mouseplay.

  • -7

Passive is pointless if the quality of the panel is questionable. Get a plasma.

    • +1

Aren't plasma panels generally undesirable in a room that has light coming from windows etc?

      • Not current generation plasma panels. Perhaps if you didn't have blinds and rays of sun were literally beaming in it may make a difference, but that is more or less a fallacy now. I'd imagine that 80%+ of TV viewing is done in either a controlled light environment or in the evening.

OLED (LG - 10k for 55inch) is a new, superior form of LED technology, yet current plasma panels are still 'as good' according to reviews on the web. Says it all.

        • -2

OLED (LG - 10k for 55inch) is a new, superior form of LED technology

OLED really is LED. Kogan and evrerybody else lies in calling this an "LED TV" when it is still LCD.

If you've seen OLED mobile phone displays, they are very impressive. It is probably the future for mobile devices (ie battery powered)
However plasma and LCD technologies have been refined so much that plasma vs OLED vs LCD really doesn't make a big difference on a TV.

        • Shops have to label them as LED-LCD I thought.

        • +1

Shops have to label them as LED-LCD I thought.

"led tv"s are led backlit and the actual colours are done by an lcd panel in front of the backlighting. older lcd's had a light bulb (not literally before someone jumps on me about that) type backlighting. led/lcd's use less power and create less heat than the older types with the globes in them. my old dell 30" lcd/bulb monitor runs at about 40c where as my kogan 55" led/lcd runs at about 25c.

i know very little about oled, but i think it uses actual individual type led's to display the colours so does not need a backlight. but i could well be totally wrong about that and im sure someone can correct me.

hope that clears it up a little. wikipedia is your friend if you want to know more :)

They use tubes, not bulbs: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cold_cathode

Its annoying because real LED display TVs are starting to appear, and there will be terrible confusion.

        • what do you mean? they have heaps of little LEDs as pixels? but I thought LEDs are too big? I've seen it works for stadium displays of sorts, but do they have tiny LEDs now that they can use?

really? thats probably why i put

older lcd's had a light bulb (not literally before someone jumps on me about that)

i was trying to write it so that someone that had no idea about the 2 techs, and specifically no clue what CCFT's are would understand the idea behind them.

just like there was/is with the old "HD" (720p) and "full HD" (1080p). it is a pitty they think they have to "market" crap to sell stuff but sadly its been happening for ever, dont even get me started on the old sony trinitron BS of decades ago…

the actual "light" part of led's are tiny. the main bit of your typical hobby electronics project led's is the plastic around the bit that puts out light. some of the surface mount led's these days are mega small…. but im saying that its not like they actually glue a heap of led's together to make oled screens, its more that thats just the easiest way to think of it/explain it.

as i said earlier, if you wana get into the technical side more head off to wikipedia and start reading. my explanations (and possibly understandings) are reasonably basic.

  • Do these cheap passive-3D TVs use the same glasses as cinemas?
Or do they use the linear-polarised glasses, that don't work with your head titled?

    • circular polarisation (or what ever its called) and my cinema glasses also work (tho the kogan ones were much nicer)

i tested it out last nite with alice in wonderland 3d :)

    • +1

The nice thing about passive 3D is that you CAN use the cinema glasses. Last week we went to watch The Avengers in 3D on my friend's HUGE new Samsung TV that cost six times more than my Soniq, but he only had two active 3D glasses, so we either had to watch it in 2D or just all go around to my house. In the end we had six people around watching my $399 Soniq 3D TV the other day, and we all enjoyed the movie in 3D. The $$$ Samsung was a big fail.

The other advantage for passive 3D is that if you wear glasses, you can order clip-on 3D glasses so you don't need to wear uncomfortable, cumbersome and heavy glasses over your glasses:
      http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/2-Pairs-Clip-on-Polarized-Lenses-…

3D is still a bit of a gimmick. Very few quality movies available. Most movies do not even benefit from the 3D at all yet. The only things really taking advantage of 3D are a few nature documentaries, but again many of them are just as good when watching in 2D.

      • I don't really like 3D. Does the polarising filter on the TV have any disadvantage for regular 2D viewing? (compared to a normal LCD)

        • The polarisation is done on the glasses, not on the TV. When you removed the glasses, it is basically a normal 2D TV (you need to turn off 3D mode of course).

Active 3D - both eye sees 1,920 x 1,080, but colour could be dimmer.
Passive 3D - each eye sees 1,920 x 540, brighter in 3D but at certain condition you may see the interlacing.

Passive 3D, you can use cinema glasses. LG probably will push for higher resolution in the future to compensate the vertical resolution reduction in passive 3D.

The best 3D clips so far are demo disc ones.

  • Same TV posted earlier before? http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/89248

    • same tv different deal. that one was free delivery which made it cheaper for me in adelaide (see comment/screencap above)

      • Im getting a delivery price of $64.32 for Metro Sydney (2196). Does that sound right?

  • +3

Glad i didn't purchase a Kogan and went with a Hisense do not regret it one bit.

    • Have used a 32" Hisense LCD for four years and counting; never been an issue with it.

Please dont buy this TV I bought this model 3 months back with extended 3 year warranty and My TV got busted..only The sound is there but no Picture..had to call them and was in the phone que for more than 50 minutes to contact them..they arranged a courier to collect the TV and now its two weeks and I am still waiting for their response. When I asked them whether they can give me a loan TV until they sort out the problem and they said they cant give a loan tv

    • +2

That is a major fault you are ENTITLED to a refund or replacement.

  • So this one or the LG 47 from TGG? Any recommendation? thanks

    • +2

LG for sure. LAN/WAN support. Better specs (rather than this weird spec. 50Hz for a 3D TV?? I thought the minimum is 100Hz). No need to worry about remote interference. 1:1 pixel mapping support. Magic Remote support. Intel WiDi support.

  • Was $750 with free deliverey previously, so works out about the same with postage. http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/89248

    • Actually more expensive for me- $86.53 postage to Metro brisbane!! :(

      = $785.53 total.

      • I see your $86.53 postage and I raise you to $90.65 postage to Newcastle, NSW
        No thanks.

I get a feeling that postage goes up with every quote Kogan does.

          OUCH!!

        • lol, well you are half a world away :P

  • great el cheapo tv for the price for a kids bedroom, backroom etc
i wouldn't recommend for the main lounge room though due to that nasty soap opera effect

  • Consider the Hz - these are only 50/60Hz Tvs, their 100Hz are an additional $300 (but may be worth it - you decide). Before purchasing I would go to any retailer and ask to view a 50Hz versus a 100Hz or higher - to me it is a marked difference.

    • So what did you think of The Hobbit in 48fps vs the usual 24fps?

    • +2

The actual benefit of 100/120Hz interpolation on true 50/60Hz material (ie. live action sports, soap opera) are minimal.

In actuality, what was more likely being demonstrated to you was something running at 24/25fps (e.g., a movie), sped up to 100fps. This is called the "soap opera effect", because it makes 24/25fps film look like 50/60fps video, and many people absolutely hate it because it makes your Hollywood movie look like Days of our Lives shot on cheap (but silky smooth!) video. But essentially its hated and gets its name because it makes 25 look like 50. The fact its actually at 100 is moot because its virtually unnoticeable.

This also has very little to do with 100/120Hz, because 50/60Hz TVs can also do this interpolation. Of course, the retailers don't turn the same mode on the cheaper TV, or demonstrate the motion interpolation on 50/60fps content, because they want to upsell you.

And now the exception. One of the only benefits of 100/120Hz TVs is that 120 is a multiple of 24, whereas 60 isn't. So on 24fps sources like Blu-Ray, you get a nice judder free picture as each frame is displayed for 5 120Hz frames, as opposed to fit into 60fps where certain frames are on screen slightly longer than others.

In other words, 100/120Hz displays content refreshing five times as slower better and more faithfully, but the higher refresh itself does sweet FA.

      • Thing is… in 3D mode, 100Hz is effectively 50Hz/50Hz split. So, I found the specs a bit weird. Minimum LG 3D TV is 100Hz because in 3D mode, it effectively feels like 50Hz. So, how did Kogan achieves 3D with 50Hz (does that mean 3D runs in 25/25Hz mode)?

I would never buy another Kogan TV. In fact, I gave my Kogan TV away. Issues:

        • The so called 100Hz Kogan TV I had, only delivered at best 50Hz
        • Remote interference (with satellite TV box, cheap DVD players, Karaoke machines)
        • Click click noise
        • 60Hz is poorly implemented, making playing a movie from laptop HDMI problematic (its HDMI Auto mode is configured to do 60Hz despite the poor implementation).
        • The poorly implemented HDMI Auto mode also means you have to manually configured your BluRay player to do 1080p@50Hz mode, rather than 1080p Auto. Same goes for media players (must force it to do 50Hz, instead of the Auto mode).
        • No 1:1 pixel mapping nor full scale mode (making laptop display completely out of whack in 1080p mode)

When it comes to TV, please don't get Kogan.

  • +4

reading up. Its ridiculous to expect "a loan tv" what do you think this is? Is it in your warranty plan? Some consumers are just obnoxious.

    • You're right, it is ridiculous to get a loaner - it should not get to that point. Repairs need to be done in a timely manner (2 weeks should be enough), and as mentioned a refund or replacement is always an option available to the owner.

  • bought 1. w 3 years warranty.

was going to buy the LG the other day. Went to Harvey Norman and the staff just all scattered and didn't pay me any attention while providing service to people buying $20 cables, other cheap goods.

Harvey Norman's loss, Kogan's gain. I'll post impressions when its here.

    • +1

Same here, but didn't buy extended warranty.

Harvey Norman staff insisted that the reason why the picture quality on a LG plasma didn't look as good as the LG LED I was comparing (with the same TV feed) was because the broadcast was SD on both TVs. What's that?? Ok I'm going to the Internets now… ooh a Kogan deal! Sold.

      • HN staff are morons, they don't get proper training how to treat customers with full respect.

        • +1

I just figured they were too busy trying to calculate their commision to pay any attention to what you were after.

For example LG offer awesome promos to people that sell their products and that's why it gets pushed harder by sales people.
They should also have some common sense and try and show off tv's strengths by having say frozen planet on blu ray instead of dr Phil in standard def.

        • Nothing worse than walking in to look at tv's and finding SD tv broadcasts playing… I can't stand that.

Brought mine a few days ago $750 with free shipping.
Expected to be here Monday, my friend just got his and it is AWESOME!!
If your worried about that big logo on the bezel, it's not big at all. The quality is great for the price, fix up the colour settings and it should look amazing.
2D to 3D is better than expected, the blacks aren't very rich but he hadn't tweaked it whatsoever.
The USB player function on it played a 720p MKV no problem and also converted it to 3D!

I can't wait for mine!! And it's super thin!

Any questions, let me know, I'll try to answer them :)

      Bought

    • Things you need to test:

      • 1080p 3D mkv (don't test 720p 2D mkv and have the TV convert it to 3D)
      • LAN & DLNA (play 1080p mkv from your network) [Update: no LAN support for this TV]
      • Remote interference
      • Laptop HDMI (whether the 1080p is crystal clear or blurry) and play a movie to ensure 60Hz is implemented properly.

2D to 3D is not that good. Even on an LG, everyone I showed it to felt there is just tiny bit of 3D. Try a real 3D movie/clip.

yes its not as good as proper 3d source, but the fact its taking a 2d source and making it into 3d thats better than 50% good i think is damn awesome.

      • I didn't try a 1080p 3D file on the TV itself but I we did on a PS3 plugged in and used the TV to convert it from side by side and it looked very nice, better than it did when converting but the conversion itself is still decent, better than nothing.

I didn't really look at the physical remote if thats what you mean, it's my friends TV so I didn't really get a chance it looks like the buttons were oddly coloured but I'm not sure till I get mine on Monday.

Not sure on the laptop, I have a MacBook and I don't have a Display Port to HDMI adapter (whatever it's called :P).

P.S. I ordered mine on the 30th (I think) at night time, it was expected to reach Bribie Island, Queensland on Monday the 7th (free shipping when I got it, although the TV was more expensive) it is coming from Melbourne.

        • Mine arrived about 2 hours ago (7AM) having trouble with 2D to 3D on live tv and the remote looks like s### but the quality is great for the price!

        • +2

          My thoughts:

Remote is just ugh, ugly, awkward and just plain weird :P but a universal remote works with it!
The 3d was just glitching, changed the channel, changed back and it works (software bug?) it only does it occasionally
The quality is excellent, it needs a bit of adjusting for the colour but it looks great out of the box.
It can play a 1080p 3D (side by side) MP4 off a USB no problems, not sure about a 1080p MKV but I know it play's 720P MKV's.
2D to 3D on a video that's not 1080p makes the video smaller for some reason, maybe it was just the videos I was trying.
The OSD and menus have an awful colour scheme, limited features and the guide is pretty bad (helloooo YourTV/IceTV guides)
The default speakers sound like I'm listening to a piece of string in a can. But I use a home theater so no biggie, and if you own a 55" TV I'd expect you to own external speakers too.
Very nice design!!, thick glass base too :)
          It is very thin!!
No optical out, no RCA out but it came with a 3.5mm to RCA adapter so that was fine :)

          And I'm blabbling on :P

          ALSO BATTERIES INCLUDED :3

        • +1

pretty much agree with you Jakiejake
i didnt think the remote was to bad, annoying caus buttons arent where im used to from my old remote. i mean it could be better, but it could be a lot worse.

2d->3d did the same the first couple of times but seems ok now. maybe it has to learn something? or could just be a little glitchy. works in the end.

i dont mind the OSD, its a cheap tv so dont expect xbmc quality.

the guide sucks and is annoying, but i tend to use the one on my pc anyway.

speakers work, but arent great, but in such a thin tv i dont expect/want better. id much rather such a small tv with shit sound than any wider/thicker tv

        • Yep! Good to know that you had the same issue too :)

For the price it is worth more than it in my opinion, more than happy, would definitely recommend!

Get a branded TV. Kogan TVs are basically re-badged AWA/Sonic or those no name brand TVs. The Kogan TV I used to have claimed to have Samsung panel, though it looked more like a Samsung rejected panel.

im happy for you to speak for yourself, your opinion is your own and thats a wonderful thing.

i first saw 3d tv when it was broadcast on FTA tv in what must have been early 80's. even the shitty mostly black and white with the stupid red/blue anaglyph 3d glasses didnt stop me from loving it. now 30 years later and having seen many more 3d things im still in love with it.

for me at least comparing 2d and 3d tv is like 2d 2.1 and 3d 5.1 sound…… just visual 3d better

        Get a branded TV.

        Kogan's a brand, right?
        Apple's a brand. I heard they re-badge Samsungs…

      • Why the need to contually bag this deal ?
You had a bad experience and you had your say.
Other people who actually have this product are saying it is OK or are saying they will report back on how it goes.
        That is being helpful.
Also from what I can tell(and I am willing to admit I have done no reasearch whatsoever) Active 3d needs to be 100hz because it flashes up 2 different pictures every cycle, so in 3d you would only get 50hz anyway.
Passive is essentially like two different panels so it only needs to run each at 50hz.

Guys first go to kogan facebook page and see comments by people who bought from them, seems there are lot of trouble who bought from them and Kogan always replying "will contact you soon", that is even after those who sent so many emails without giving up when they have trouble with the products purchased. I could post those many comments here, but you can check yourself at www.facebook.com/kogan

    • I've seen complaints about people getting cracked screens, not Kogan's fault though, it had been hit on the ground when getting it out of the truck.

      • No its not about complaints, its about Kogan won't respond to the people who bought their goods when they inquire. Most of the complaints are about this customer service.

  • The deal has expired… but I would buy one of these if it came back on special.

  • Kogan products = CRAP never buying from kogan again

  • If you want to buy "cheaper" products i.e Not the Sony, Samsung, LG range

then consider a half decent brand like TEAC, HiSense, etc
Not some TV manufufactured by 4 people in China

    • HiSense is considered a half decent brand now?

Thought they were just like Soniq and Palsonic…

      Plasma, that's why it's cheaper (and it's 5"'s less)

  • Bought one last night, been 50/50 all weeks during Christmas period, finally pulled the trigger. My first time deal with Kogan Mobile I'm very pleased with the service so cross fingers for this one!

  • This TV is now no longer for sale, so I hope if you wanted it, you got one.

You can't say we didn't warn you, the amount of times people posted it here on ozbargain!!
