LivingSocial storing PayPal details?

I was wondering if anyone has paid for a LivingSocial voucher using paypal and had it processed without being prompting you for your Paypal login?

With the last voucher I bought, I chose Paypal the continued the payment processes. Next thing I know the voucher was all purchased and I never sawing the paypal screen or got prompted for my Paypal password. I've not seen that happen with any other site before so was wondering if what they do is normal (i.e. are they storing my Paypal password)?

The other issue is that because the Paypal screens was not shown, there was nowhere to selected the Paypal payment type. Normally when I log into Paypal I'll select credit card (because Paypal defaults to bank account). I don't normally use the bank acount so don't have any money in it. Therefore it if uses that default bank account, I could get hit with an insufficient funds fee.

I did call them up but it seemd to be too techincal or something and I didn't get much of an answer. After the customer service girl went to ask someone else, she just said it was something along the lines of "I've used Paypal with them before and Paypal is very safe so its all OK".

If anyone can shed some light, that would be appreciated.

  • Maybe you didn't log out of a previous Paypal session before the LivingSocial purchase and the session was still active due to the cookie in the browser so Paypal didn't need to reauthenticate you. Just log out of Paypal and retry the purchase. I always explicitly log out of services when I'm done.

  • Definitely sure livingsocial stored my credit card details, everytime I buy with my login I don't have to enter anything else and the payment will go through, so not surprise it will store paypal details.

    • Yes, I knew they stored my credit card details but was suprised they also seemd to have my Paypal login.

  • I don't think anybody but Paypal can receive your login and password since you only ever type them in to a Paypal form. (And it would be a serious security risk if they allowed anybody else to solicit those since phishers would pretend to be a Paypal login form. Not that it stops them from trying anyway.) So as I said I think it's because your browser still had a valid session with Paypal at the time you purchased so you didn't have to reauthenticate.

  • The whole point of paypal is that you are supposed to be safe. If ANY retailer/biller can store the password, that negates the whole point of it.

  • I know this is old but this just happened to me! WTF?? and it debited my bank account rather than my paypal account. Definitely didn't login to paypal and it wasn't logged in. That was BS… I am going to complain.

Just logged into Paypal and saw this: "Billing Description:
LivingSocial will keep your PayPal information on file to make future purchases even easier". Don't even know where I gave this authorisation and how I can remove it.

Just figured out how to remove it but have no idea how it occurred originally - guess I probably have to watch out more. To check/remove automatic payments - recommended you check:

To cancel an automatic payment with a merchant:

Log in to your PayPal account.
Click Profile at the top of the page.
      Click My Money.
Beside 'My preapproved payments', click Update to find your payment.
Select the payment, and then click Cancel.

      • Thanks Shaiguy for figuring out cancel this and posting for others to see. Like you I have no idea how that was set up in the first place. At least now I know it's cancelled.

      • Thanks for explaining. I see Grays online has decided to open a relationship with me. I have cancelled that one.

I had set up a payment thing with eHarmony a couple of years ago. That was cancelled, but they still had authority to charge me $499.99 per month. FFS!

        Thanks again.

  • Not sure about paypal - http://www.cnet.com/au/news/livingsocial-hacked-50-million-a…
But they claim to have a cyber attack and are asking you to change your password https://www.livingsocial.com/createpassword

  • this living social is crap! i just got the same issue as describe in this post.

  • They did it again. Seems everytime I buy something from them, they somehow get added as a pre-approved vendor! have to make sure I cancel them every time.

  • They should not do it

    • Probably a part of their policy to store your info when you sign-up.
