ADSL Broadband Plans

Hey everyone! I'm trying to find a relatively "cheap" ADSL Broadband plan for my household. We cannot install ADSL2+ Broadband because we don't have it in the area that we live in. So ADSL is our only option for fast cheap internet.

The one I was thinking was TPG's Ultimate 1500/25GB, with speeds of 1500k/256k and downloads of 25GB (10GB peak +15GB off peak). There's no extra cost when download limit is over, just slower speeds. Also the off peak times are from 4am to 9am. The monthly cost is $49.95, which is reasonably cheap, but the thing that held me back was the installation fee of $59.95 on a 6 month contract. There's an installation fee for all ADSL Broadband plans with TPG.

I'm trying to find something else similar (the same amount of downloads and speed), reliable and a company that doesn't charge so much for installation fees to compare.

Thanks for any help in advance!

To compare broadband plans, I would strongly suggest that you visit whirlpool, which has extensive tools and user feedback on the various plans offered by different ISPs.

    You wont..
Everyone will charge an installation fee and usually a disconnection fee too.
You can thank Telstra for that..
Some companies will waive installation fees if you sign up for long contract periods (ie 24 months).
Whirlpool is the way to go though, they have all the relevant info and it's an exhaustive search.. you should check out reliability on the forums too..
It's worth paying a bit extra for a reliable company that wont do dodgy things like double charge (I'm looking at you "company that is named after a famous extinct, flightless bird").
Internode are the industry standard when it comes to top service, I use Adam, but they're SA/NT only.

  • I think the installation is waived if you're on a 18 month contract with TPG.

    • I'd really rather not have an 18 month contract but maybe that's just me.

  • I'm in the same situation and using ADSL1 and Exetel have served me very well for the past 6 months, and they're #6 on Whirlpool's most popular ISPs.

I've never needed support from Exetel but I guess that could be one down side if you are not tech savvy (not that there is anything complex though and their forums seem helpful anyway).

For the record, I'm on an old plan of Exetel's very similar to TL-BA (1500/256Kbps for $50/mth with 12GB on peak and 48GB off peak). Off peak is midnight to noon.

Other plans I remember looking at were Internode Power25 or something like that and something from TPG. Other ISPs were eliminated from the shortlist for installation fees, other fees, bad rep, etc.

  • Same here mate I can't get ADSL2+ here either but I can tell you I have been with tpg for nearly 3 years now and they are a pretty good service, I can't remember what I paid for installation but I think it was a bit more than $59 so that doesn't sound too bad, and like the other guy said you will pretty much pay for installation no matter who you go with we can't do much about that.I am on the Ultimate1500/50G now I was once on the plan that you are thinking about but I found just under normal surfing and viewing alot of youtube videos that I was hitting the 10G limit in no time and trust me you don't want to be using it when it's capped at the slower speed it's worse than dial up! so for the extra $10 a month the next plan up I never hit the limit of 25G and allways have full speed. and really with the tpg plans I don't really look at the "offpeak" download unless your going to be really using the net between 4am to 9am alot. I only look at the peak downloads because that's what you will be using the most.

All the best mate and good luck with your search for an adsl internet service.

  • Whirlpool is definitely the place for this.

Basically, Telstra own the infrastructure, so they will charge your ISP for the initial setup, and also charge a fee if you disconnect within six months. That's where the setup fee's for ISP's come from - they are simply passing on that fee. Generally, you will have to pay that fee upfront (with a short contract length), and some ISP's will waive that fee if you sign up to a 12, 18 or 24-month contract.

Honestly, TPG is one of the best value ISP's out there… I'm on their 80Gb plan (35Gb peak, 45Gb off-peak).
