Easiest Way to Automate Smart Device/Security Broadcast

I've seen videos on Facebook that show some cool automation with smart security cameras and then I guess and IFTTT. I'm wondering if anyone has any free options for automation?

I'd love to be able to broadcast over my security camera "Recording has started" or something similar when the camera spots someone only at specific times during the night, as a bit of an extra deterrent.

Using Eufy cameras and Google Home ecosystem. Looked at the Home Assistant app but it was asking me for a Home Assistant Server…

Any advice appreciated.

  • Wired ring cameras do that automatically, just fyi. May have been what you saw?

    • Ahhh yeah it very well could have been! Here's hoping there's a way I can make it happen with Eufy then..

    • dont you have to pay to watch your videos across the internet… i heard they have a subsciption which is why i never bought them

  • I have a Reolink Argus 4 Pro that lets you record audio for the siren and set specific times for it.

On Reolink, you can turn on the siren, then set a custom sound and record you saying recording is in progress.

    • Same with uniden solo pro. I think the limit is a 5 sec recording.

      • I use this file…

        Has worked well so far…

Link doesn't work. Is it the sound of a shot gun loading?

          • @JIMB0: Looks like too many OzBargainers clicked the link… 🤣

  • home assistant, frigate
its not for the tech unsavy

my cameras greet people as they approach the house.

    • how exactly did you do this? frigate or hass? what cameras? I am guessing my stupid hikvision cameras are no good for this but may beeeee

I am guessing my stupid hikvision

        Hikvision work great with frigate

how exactly did you do this?

Create a tts automation that is triggered by people entering a zone from a zone. So you can differentiate people coming and going.
Could add facial recognition into the mix too for a more personalized experience

        frigate or hass

You'd need both frigate and homeassistant

        • oh cool. how do the cameras greet? frigate can do that?

          • @aik: No, that's for homeassistant, whether tts or media playback

      • i have a reolink doorbell and the rest are tplink tapo. inc the floodlight ones

frigate does the video and notifies home assistant of people. you can filter by zones(that you define) and/or person size (bounding box)

home assistant invokes text to speech and send down to your compatible-with-2way-audio cameras

you can even link up llm to analyse the image and roast incoming people

        • The TTS is where I struggle - I run Frigate, one Hikvision camera with a speaker, added to HA twice - as ONVIF and as a Frigate camera, but TTS in HA's devtools does not let me send any TTS to it. What do I miss?

  • With Google you can setup announcements with TP-Link contact or motion sensors.

If someone comes near my front door or driveway the Tapo Hub will chime. I used to have announcements through Google Home but that became annoying very fast, especially when you have lots of people over coming and going. You can also setup the same thing with contact sensors.

  • Just get one with a floodlight. The end.

  • I thought telling people they were being recorded would:

    a. Invite people to damage the cameras.
    or
    b. Cause the vain or TikTok types to perform for the camera (especially with the lighting and their stylist tagging along).

If you want people to leave, play some Rick Astley, Never Gonna Give You Up and they will be gone in 60 seconds.

    • I think just announcing something relatively loud would be a decent deterrent as well. Ricky A isn't a bad shout though.

I have Wyze v3 pro. I have enabled the rule if person detected in driveway between 10pm-5am sirens on all my v3 pro cams will go off, with flash lights.

I think you can get them for about $60 each from amazon. The video quality is pretty good at 2.5k.

    • wow, thats a bit exterme, how does it work when a cat walks around or a bird flys through… id hate for the siren to sound off every time they get detected.

      • It only goes off if person is detected. Something they say built in AI features that can differentiate humans from any other object. Never had this go off except when i accidentally go in drive way sometimes during automation times.

I do it with a Google camera pointing down at my front door (so i can see when packages are delivered)
    When it detects someone it
    - Broadcasts on speakers that someone is at front door
    - Changes two hub displays the camera for two minutes
    - Turns the front (hue light) on for two minutes

This is all done on the Home google scripts https://home.google.com/
