Heat Pump Hot Water System in Melbourne

I'm having a lot of trouble finding a good deal on switching to a heat pump system for my hot water, hoping someone has gone through it can give advise advice on what they paid for one.

I've gotten a few quotes but they're all over the place in terms of pricing. Aquatech X8 at around $1,500 installed (replacing instant gas) was the cheapest I got, but no one seems to want to break down cost of the unit, cost of install then rebate, so I'm a bit lost on what I should be expecting.

There are so few deals posted on here too that it's hard to find a guide, unlike solar.

I would be prioritising a highly rated unit with a competent installer over the best deal, that quote you got would be the out of pocket cost of unit installed after the government rebates. Have a read up on the MEEH group on Facebook for good installers in Melb. I got a quote from Melbourne Heat Pumps for a Hydrotherm Dynamic X8 about a year and a half back and the cost breakdown looked like this.

Hydrotherm Dynamic X8: $2,910.00 inc. GST.
Labour & Material: $945.00 inc. GST.
    Electrician: $330.00 inc. GST.
Less Discount for assignment of STC Rebate: -$1,000.00
Less Discount for assignment of VEECs Rebate: -$285.00
    Total: $2,900.00 inc. GST.
*Less Solar Victoria Solar Homes Rebate: -$1,000.00 (If eligible)
    Total: $1,900.00 inc. GST.

    • I paid $1500 for Aquatech X8 including a dedicated electrical circuit (rcbo in switchboard, not just piggybacked off closest powerpoint)
Regional-ish Victoria and including same rebates

We went with these guys, $1,218 after all rebates for Aquatech X6 225L, including removal of our old gas system. Installed in Aug last year, very happy with everything. Easy to deal with, installers very professional, cleaned everything after works, all installed neatly, couldn't be happier. Would recommend.

Is there a reason why you want Heat Pump? after 1 shower or bath it runs out of hot water…

I got Continuous Flow Hot system for $1500 installed in Melbourne couple years ago. Never looked back and hot water never runs out.

try this website to compare costs:

    • Heat pumps are super efficient with the energy use. It can be timed to heat water at a particular time of day (so if you have a solar PV system, it basically costs nothing to run). You could get one for a low cost installed with the rebate from STCs.

My family of three never ran out of hot water in 5 years in our daily use. But it might happen if you have the smallest system and the shower is running in two bathrooms at the same time I guess. Pick a system that has suitable storage size for your household

      • Curious how many hours a day ur heatpump runs totop up the hot water

Mines on a timer from 10am to 4pm, however it shuts off generally at about noon as it reaches temp.

    • How do you know it runs out after 1 shower? You know that they are around 260-300 litres on average?

  • Does a heat pump hot water system still perform well during Melbourne’s icy mornings (e.g., -1°C)?

I’m considering switching from an instant gas system to a heat pump (e.g., Aquatech X8 or similar), but I’m unsure how well these systems perform during Melbourne’s winter — especially early mornings when temperatures drop to 0°C or even -1°C.

A few questions for those already using one:

Does the unit still heat water effectively in those cold conditions without needing backup?

Have you experienced lukewarm water or longer heat-up times in the mornings?

How much electricity (kWh) does your system typically consume per day to maintain hot water?

Also keen to hear any tips on timer settings, usage with solar, or general advice for Melbourne households.

    Thanks in advance!
