I've been watching HN but any brand is fine if not shocking in price nor lack of support.
Most gaming is not top tier MS, just would like the oomph of dedicated.

How much Oomph are you looking for here? I guess the baseline you'd be looking at would be around the 3050-ish, or 6550/6500-ish on the AMD side, because anything worse (2050-ish) and you may as well go for integrated graphics. It'll be hard to say if that's the one you'd want to go for without some idea of which games and what settings/framerates you're wanting though.
Size? Budget?
From what I understand, AMD support of Linux is much better than NVIDIA. So a laptop with AMD dedicated GPU would be the better option
