[Pre Order, Switch 2] Donkey Kong Bananza $99 + Delivery ($0 C&C) @ JB Hi-Fi and Big W

290

Still expensive I know, but at least it is sub-$100, this is the cheapest I could find for a preorder (HN $108, $104 Officeworks).

Could still get cheaper before launch, note this NOT a launch title, release date is 17th July (console 5th June), so no need to rush really.

Big W
JB Hi-Fi

*Note, Officeworks won't price beat preorders :-(

    "don't be shy girl,
    Donkey Kong Bananza,
Shake your body like a brand-new 3D platforming action adventure – available exclusively on Nintendo Switch 2."

  • Cheaper than I was expecting, given the givens. There's always the Big W discount as well.

    • Ah yes, also, JB Hi-Fi perks voucher (if you have one) for $10 off, that almost makes it reasonable.

      • +1

cheapest way is still to do the $49 + trading in 2 games at EB using the 2 for $30 games from JB HIFI, works out at $79 Donkey Kong

  • can we still get the 2 game voucher things for ~120 ? and use one for this game? [digital]

    • +1

      No.
      (Scroll to the bottom)

      • +2

Stands to reason for these vouchers since that would be insanely cheap.

I do wonder if Nintendo are going to introduce a 'Switch 2' version of the same thing with different pricing in time though 🤔

  • +2

They should release this on one day 1!!

    • I'd guess it's a deliberate marketing move, drip feed the big first party titles over the next few months, trying to keep up the hype/interest and drive system sales. I reckon we'll see a new 3D Mario just before Christmas.

I thought the Switch 2 Direct was very strong overall, but it was very heavy on 3rd party games (especially game ports). While it is great to see strong support from developers, normally Nintendo would have a stronger first party showing, so I expect a very strong pipeline of games still to come.

Excluding Mario Kart (which IS a massive launch), what other first party launch titles were there? Switch 2 Welcome Tour? Speaking of which, Welcome Tour should be FREE and they know it (I will die on this hill). I'm hoping Nintendo come to their senses on this before launch and offer it as a free download.

Doubtful of new 3D Mario this year as DK looks like it's made by the Mario Odyssey team.

        • Surely they can't go 12+ months without a new 3D Mario on a new console…?

          • @A 1: They did that for the Wii U and GameCube already.

Still messing with me that chasing $99 on a switch 2 will be a deal

  • If you wait any longer Trump's tariffs will hit hard. PS5 already confirmed to get hit with a price rise in Australia.

    • +4

      But why?
Increase in US I can understand
But why in little old AU?

      • -2

        Economies of scale..

Less demand from US market means the components that make up the PS5 can't be purchased as cheaply in bulk.. so everyone gets a price bump

        • Still, seems very strange that Sony have increased prices in Europe, Africa and Australia but have not increased prices in the US. Maybe they just haven't announced it yet.

          • +1

@A 1: I can't remember what their price hike history has been like within the USA for the PS5 generation, but I do recall that not long after I bought my PS5 in 2022, Sony raised the price of the PS5 across the world except for the USA.

The excuse at the time was "supply chain issues"… when they'd finally gotten that sorted and PS5 supply matched demand. Sure, Sony.

          • @A 1: Probably hiking our prices to try and offset selling in a bigger market to 300+ million people in the US.

            • +1

@beyonddd: I know there's been a slim and pro update but it's just wild to me that a 5 year old console keeps increasing in price like this. Afertall, components should be getting cheaper over time.

      • +3

If we ignore the assumption that the price rise is directly due to Tarrifs as that requires a roundabout logic that doesn't make sense (offsetting lost sales in the USA by lowering sales everywhere else?)

Increasing prices decreases sales, unless Sony knows that demand is very high, they will not be able to increase prices without disproportionately decreasing sales and ending up with lower profitability than before the price rise. The PS5 is not a new console, there is no reason to believe Sony has such demand that they can increase price without lowering profitability. That means they have been forced to increase prices.

A price rise is likely due to increased costs. Manufacturing costs may have increased because FABs have increased prices for contract manufacturing. That can be due to a significant increase in demand for microchips.

There has veen a very significant increase in investment in military equipment, which likely uses the same FABs that make videogame consoles.

Note the Switch 2 is manufactured by Samsung on the outdated 8nm node, which was already outdated when it was used for the Nvidia 3000 series GPUs. The Sony console is manufactured by TSMC on 7nm, which while outdated compared to the current 5nm and 3nm factories, is still more expensive than Samsung's 8nm.

Samsung's 8nm is a lot less energy efficient, on a mobile console where that is a very significant disadvantage. Nintendo didn't choose to use Samsung unless the cost of more advanced nodes is prohibitively expensive

        • Thank you, greatlamp, for shining a light on this.

        • It’s also demand as well, and using other countries to subsidise its most important market, which is the USA.
It’s a big multifaceted problem for big corporations that would prefer to leave things as they were.

  • +1

    It's on, like Donkey Kong!

  • Does the Everyday extra discount work on consoles and/or games?

    • +1

      Games yes, consoles no.

  • -1

lol $99 for a game like this? When I paid 70 ish for Baldurs Gate 3

    • +1

      That was not day 1

      • -1

even if they were the same price .. the amount of content etc is soo much less

  • +1

This is pretty cheap considering the price overseas. Wonder why we are getting good deals on games.

Australia is also getting the cheapest switch 2 price when converted USD too.

    • +1

      Shhh, don't tell anyone…

I was doing some conversions and noticed the same thing actually which surprised me. Also why I decided to preorder and lock in the current price (trying to avoid any increases).

AUD has been consistently dropping against the Yen as well, which is not helping our purchasing power, down 10% last 12 months, down 5% last month.

    • The RRP is not, retailers giving up their cut isn't really a comparison.

DK is $70USD ~= $110AUD, which is the RRP. Ignoring taxes.

      • At the moment yeah, you're correct, when I checked a week ago the conversion came out at $117 AUD.
Even at the current more favourable exchange rates, the console bundle at $499.99 USD stills comes out to $788.75.
The currency will keep moving around of course, guess I'm just plesantly surprised we're being charged less than the converted US RRP.

  • Do HN price match pre-orders? or at all?

    • +1

They do have a price match policy (even 7 days after purchase), not sure if they will do preorders, ask them in live chat on their site I guess.

Although, now that the 10% HN gift card offer (min purchase was $500) has ended, it might be worth waiting for another decent offer. Or do the leg work for the EB offer mentioned near the top of this comment chain.

  • Insane

  • Kinda wacky for Switch 2 games to be this expensive nowadays, when the norm was $69 AUD for Switch 1 games.
I know the average game price has stayed consistent over time and Nintendo generally does not do DLCs, but it’s surreal to see that what would’ve once been a $69-79 game is now nearly $100+.
This game better be GoTY for this to be worth it.

  • Just got this for $79 using big w $20 off promotion using code BACK20
