Not sure if my calculator is working, says $2376 over that contract period?

    • +1

      Read the FAQ :)

      • +1

I read the FaQ but I don't understand when you can cancel etc.

        • +2

Can be immediate once your service becomes active

          • +11

@BargainsGrabber: And just to confirm - once you do that, you get charged the minimum charge for the plan? So the 23/24 months x $800 + $99 = $865.67

            • +6

@TheFreaK: That’s correct, well at least for the last few deals that people have been doing :)

            • +1

              @TheFreaK: Why is it x $800 and not x $1400?

            • +4

@TheFreaK: Wanna buy this for the mother in law.

Could someone explain how to get this i phone 16 base model for 865.67?

It seems like based on other comments

24 month with cancellation fee was 800

But not sure where 99$ comes from?

              Also 800 + 99 should = 899 so how they get 865.67?

Could someone please help a noob? Tia

              • +5

                @ATTS: (23/24) x 800+99 (even though it’s 1.4k they view the GC as $800 and you’re one payment down out of 24)
                (~0.9883) x 800+99
                766.67+99
                = 865.67

The $99 is for the first plan payment

                • +1

                  @TheFreaK: Oh i see thanks!

Also is this phone network locked?

And can we still use current mobile nummber by porting?

                  • +3

@ATTS: Not network locked and you can use your main mobile number by porting but if you’re just doing this for the phone go get a cheap prepaid sim for like $5 and port that number as it’s just easier than disrupting your main plan

          • @BargainsGrabber: I could do with some mobile data, if I am stuck with paying $99 for the first month in any case, can I use it for a few weeks and cancel before the next bill is issued?

        • Yeah not sure about the FAQ, not seeing it either and says something about a voucher, what voucher.

          • +2

@BatmanAU: The $1397 off becomes a voucher on JB system but not the Telstra system, as that’s only reflecting as $800

      • +9

This site is getting pathetic , worried about who's dick is bigger ⁉️

    • +51

It's a well known Ozbargain JBHifi method. You sign up for the 24 months to take advantage of the discount. Then once you have the phone in your possession, contact JB Hifi / Telstra on their App and cancel the plan. You will pay the early termination / Voucher repayment fee which in this case is $800.00 along with the first month of $99.00

End result is you only pay $899.00 or even $800.00 if you can convince the rep to waive the first month.

This has been done for years. I did it for my Ipad Pro m4. Others did it for Samsung/Pixel and older iPhones.

Yes it works. No you do not pay $2376.00. Yes it is well known. No it is not different this time.

      • +1

How about if you port out instead of contacting Telstra to cancel service?

        • That works too. I did it on my Google Pixel 9 pro when a similar deal was going a few months ago.

          • -1

@hju: Would doing this have a negative impact on your credit check?

            • @lzh938: I don't see why it would. You still have to pay Telstra the early termination fee, so as long as that is paid on time, it shouldn't be an issue.

      • Wouldnt you lose your mobile phone service then???

        • +2

could sign up for a new number/service with a $2 sim the day before you sign up….

      • -1

I’m reading the T&C’s and it doesn’t mention that you won’t have to pay the $99 a month contract out after you cancel???

        • You dont have to pay, many people have used this method, me included

          • +1

@Qazxswec: Awesome, now to work out if i actually need one lol

      • -3

Now we know that the resale value of iPhone 16* is $1400 lower. My 27m S23 Ultra with 99% batt health, has 4x RAM for bigger discount than $543 (~1650/2300) & ~$400 extra bonuses on educ preorder (1y more advanced AI happy ;)

        • +8

Awesome, another Samsung owner hanging out in an Apple iPhone thread ;)

      • +1

You only pay voucher installments for remaining contract months, so it's $99 + 23x $33.33 = $865.67 if they don't accept immediate cancellation ($800).

      • iPhone fans & curious: why paying much-more for a similar flagship-Android…some argue a slightly-better apple-software & processor?

        • +4

Some are in the Apple ecosystem; iPad, Mac mini, MacBook Air/pro.

      • Can you sign up with a new number or do you have to port your number in?

        • +2

You get a $5 sim from aldi, activate it, walk to jb, port it, get the voucher, then cancel the plan

      • How do you get around not porting your personal number over?

        • See above

          • @Qazxswec: some user mentioned you could have a new numbers with them directly, is that not true?

            • +3

@Mulumulu: I think the deal is for port in only, when i did mine it was, but it only took me 15 minutes to have the aldi sim up and running, its super simple

              • @Qazxswec: Thanks, I'll assess me alternatives given that there are no Aldis nearby and my phone can't handle e-sims, an upgrade is long overdue.

            • @Mulumulu: Yes u can have new number with them at a cost of $200.
So aldi sim $5 or new number $200

          • @Qazxswec: Thanks

      • Hey mate, where did you get the $800 fee? TIA

        • +1

It’s the early termination fee paid out to Telstra but it would be pro rated (23/24 months x $800 = $766)

      • -2

Can I claim 899$ during tax return if it's used for work?

        • Not financial advice.

But we asked and were told it 'should' be. They give you a gift card voucher for $1400 which you then use to pay for the phone. So it's no different to going in, buying a gift card voucher, and using that to pay for the phone.

          But… it might not work.

Not sure on the rules of using gift cards but would've thought it's the same as using cash.

          • @brfc888: I've claimed a salary sacrifice on a phone purchased with discounted gift cards. I was hoping I could be clever and claim the full invoice amount, but they typically also want proof of payment, not just proof of purchase. My bank statement showed the reduced amount I paid for the gift card, so that's what was counted against the salary sacrifice. Either way, was still able to salary sacrifice what I actually paid.

      • Hi mate, is this 24months plan always available?

    • +2

I bought it today (Iphone 16 128gb) and cancelled the plan. Received invoice of $766.59 + $99 paid upfront at Jbhifi. Total paid = $865.59

      • Do you cancel it within a day or do you wait for a few days? And can you cancel it online or have to call up?

        • Cancelled straightaway

          • @Jiva: And the other questions?

            • +2

@dankru: I cancelled it via chat. You can do either way. You can cancel it any time even after a year as far as you don't mind paying $99 every month. 1st month is paid so you can cancel any time within 30 days.

    • Already a first one above yours :)

        • +1

Flutterby I’m trying, but why can’t I be the first idiot of the day for once, I’m always coming last and never get a participation award :(

  • +12

"Newly released" is doing heavy lifting for a September 20, 2024 release date… Would have pulled the pin if it was the 256GB version…

    • Fixed :D

    • -6

Honest question but what do you use 266gb for?

I have 128 and have never exceeded 80%, even with hires audio and saved videos

      • I have 13 mini with 256gb with 78 free.

      • +7

        Do you have kids though?

        • +1

You should have an iCloud sub then.
Use the savings on the price of the sub - bonus points for paying via Türkiye

      • -5

        i have 256GB and 50% i have for pron :)

  • +1

Nice! This also extends to others in iPhone 16 series, $1400 discount for other models. Pro 128GB comes down to $397 out of pocket

    • +6

Not sure if it does as the terms did exclude these this time:

Available to port-in mobile service (excluding JB Upfront/Prepaid, The Good Guys Mobile & Broadband, Telstra & Boost) customers only. The Apple iPhone 16 128GB (referred to as the “JB Hi-Fi Voucher” in the Telstra Terms and Conditions available at www.telstra.com.au/jbhifi-mobile-terms) replaces the dollar value of the Voucher in the Critical Information Summary and will be available to you instore after connection approval by Telstra. If you cancel or move to a lower cost/different plan then you must pay a Voucher Repayment Fee to Telstra pro-rated against the remaining months of your plan’s minimum term. Excludes iPhone 16 256GB/512GB, iPhone 16e, iPhone 16 Plus, iPhone 16 Pro & iPhone 16 Pro Max models. This offer is not available in conjunction with any other JB Hi-Fi mobile or broadband offer or Trade-In coupon offer and is limited to 3 connections per customer. # Speeds may vary due to various factors such as location, hardware and network congestion. If you exceed your data allowance, your speed will be capped at 1.5Mbps. Speed is slowed further in busy periods. For full Terms & Conditions and Critical Information Summary visit www.jbhifi.com.au/mobile-plans. Available instore only. Offer ends 21/04/25.

Edit: Didn’t neg your comment btw

      • @BargainsGrabber Interesting, check out the 16 Pro 128GB page here https://www.jbhifi.com.au/products/apple-iphone-16-pro-128gb…

I can't copy paste the text but the wall reads almost exactly the same, but refers to the iPhone 16 range. Perhaps different text because 16 base model is $1397, whereas rest of the range is $1400 off?

        • Could be - as this is only $1397 off
Best deal to discount wise, as we have seen lots of discounted pro and pro max recently, with the latest being the 1TB offer from Costco

          • @BargainsGrabber: Is this deal better than Costco or vice versa?

            • @Mick1234: Sorry I missed your comment - can’t keep up with all of new comments notification that I’m receiving from this deal

For the base iPhone 16, it is - since the discount % ratio is higher
But if like for a like to that Costco iPhone 16 Pro Max 1TB deal, Costco wins as the discount was $749 vs ~$534 ($1400 discount upfront less $766.67 ETC cost less $99 first month fee) from JB

Can I claim 899$ during tax return if it's used for work?

      • -3

        This is called tax fraud.

        • +1

          How?

If the mobile is used for work one can claim that lawfully. The only question is if I can claim the 800$ penalty for cancelling the plan early.

          • +2

@DealWithReality: Or you could claim the phone itself. I think they issue a full price invoice for the phone

          • @DealWithReality: Does rarely checking Teams and Outlook on phone consider as work related work? I have turned on Teams notifications on my phone as well so Technically a trigger is running in the background of my phone all the time, but to be fair can I say 20% of my phone is used for work purposes?

            • +1

@Techefy: Work could be broadly considering as anything that generates revenue or income.

So yeah, teams and outlook for sure, being on call, calling colleagues, investment related matters and business.

Any device less than 300 can be tax deductible in full. Anything over that has to be claimed as depreciation over three years.

So if you pay 1400, div that by 3 and claim that each year. Make sure you don't buy the device in month on May and June and claim 1/3rd. Maybe can claim 1/5th the amount since it was used for less than 2 months.

Do your own reading and check tax law. Above is my advice.

  • +2

I will wait till the 18 thanks

    • +19

I’ll remind you in 2 years time in a new deal post :)

      • +2

        ill be waiting

    • +3

Shit , why stop there !

    • +3

Why bother waiting for the 18 when you might as well wait for the 19, it's only an extra year away!

      • +2

But wait til the 20 so your facebook app can load 0.0000001 seconds faster!

      • +3

just take it all the way to iphone 69 so at least you can say N I C E everytime someone says iphone 69

      • iPhone Co will be owned by Huawei then (4x RAM/memory/charging speed ;)

        • I wonder which companies will still exist that many years away? T think back to 45 years ago, a lot of then big companies have gone to that big Stockmarket in the sky.

Heck even Apple was only ever referred to in the media as “Beleaguered Apple Computer” before Saint Jobs returned to save the company. Otherwise it would have gone the track of Compaq, Atari, Iomega, Palm, Napster, Wang, Altavista etc.

  • +3

Bit lost on the OP calculations. Can someone help me understand?

    99*24 = $2376
    -$800 JB voucher = $1576.

How does OP calcs result in $865.67

    • +1

You only need to pay the ETC, which is pro rata on 23/24 basis + the first month $99 fee

I’ve had no luck in getting the $99 fee refunded but its not a big issue if it doesn’t as we’re already getting significant discount on newly launched devices from JB/Telstra

    • +1

(23/24) x 800+99 (as you're only paying for one month)
      (~0.9883) x 800+99
      766.67+99
      = 865.67

      • We already pay $99 one month, what is 23/24 for? Thanks!

        • See @BargainsGrabber response above

          • @TheFreaK: Just to confirm, (Im sorry, a bit stupid).

Port any number to JB (Telstra) then cancel and port that number straight away. First $99 will be deducted from payment method. Then next bill (final bill) will come at roughly $800~ and the phone is yours?

      • -7

Can I claim 899$ during tax return if it's used for work?

  • would be nice if this is iPhone 16 pro max

    • +5

It’s the same discount as mentioned above, a flat $1400 off
