Surprised the correct answer for this was the first comment.
I've used WW mobile overseas and can confirm.
He is a Pro in this area. You can check his previous comments.
Well you learn something new every day
And WW Mobile is the best value Telstra MVNO in my opinion.
But who needs WiFi calling when not in Australia?
Nearly everyone uses Whatapp over WiFi these days or othewise Apple's iMessage abd FaceTime or FaceBook Messneger
Some banned phones (due to 3G closure) may be still working via WiFi Calling.
Can’t call a bank on FaceTime, WhatsApp or fb messenger 🤷♂️
Short answer: It'll work on Telstra Wholesale MVNO's (subject to the Wi-Fi network being used not blocking it). It won't work on Optus or Vodafone (and their MVNO's), as they geo-restrict it to Australia.
This matches my experience overseas using Telstra.
Also, the eSIM I bought upon landing overseas supports calling and SMS using VoLTE. My Telstra SIM shows as 'Telstra Backup Calling' in the network name at the top of the screen rather than the local roaming network Telstra is aligned with.
However, when visiting a second country the local eSIM is 'roaming' and VoLTE doesn't work for Telstra. Wi-Fi calling still works fine though.
helium mobile does
Worked for me on Boost.
Worked fine on Mate for me. So as above, Telstra MVNOs.
cheers went for boost
For boost, it only worked for Australian numbers. But unable to make calls to overseas numbers.
i tested, turned airplane mode, enabled wifi connected to vpn in the United States, made a call to an australian number dial assist came on no problem. Then tried calling a number internationally no problem checked call logs and confirmed call was made as if you were in australia.
Awesome. I'll try this next time I am overseas.
Thank you
It will not work calling overseas, your method didn't pass all the test, vpn has nothing to do with volte or wifi calling, otherwise people on Optus or Vodafone have been vpn back to melb/syd in droves rather than buying roaming sim.
in fact you can't even call 13/18 number whilst overseas with boost, you have to find alternative mobile or landline number if you want to get to Australian business support help line.
you have misunderstood. I connected to a US VPN while in australia, changed phone to airplane mode then tried to make a phone call it used dial assist thinking it was in the US. This was not for dialing back into australia with a vpn while abroad. for your info wifi calling works perfectly in the states on boost.
@SpeedAU: yes, i know what you're talking about. I can tell you the network knows that you're overseas or not regardless of airplane mode or vpn. Otherwise people on optus and voda has been doing it for ages. Your testing simply work because boost still know you're still in australia, so calling +44 3921 or 0011 44 3921 works out the same.
But when you're overseas roaming/on wifi those calls above will fail regardless if you're on vpn or not, even calling +61411 321 321 back to australia will fail, the only option that work are 0411 321 321, 02 xx and so on.
I know because I did that last year and the year before.
@lgacb08: no one is using a vpn while overseas it's to prove it will work in the country you are going to. Which i actually flew to that country and it worked. end of story.
@SpeedAU: it's the end of your bluffing only mate. VPN has no bearing on overseas calling, that's why I said you're a bit clueless in your testing method and reaching a premature conclusion.
Did you use a VPN on your phone, or an external one?
VoWIFI bypasses the VPN on your phone, so if that's the one you're using, you're still "in Australia". The only reliable way to test this is to use a network-level VPN (eg, on your router). I used to do this when I lived in the US to use VoWifi on Optus - VPN on the phone didn't work, but network VPN back to Australia did.
this is correct! network vpn
Worked for me in Europe using Woolies mobile.
How do you set up your phone to use wifi calling overseas? I'm with Aldi and their info is sparse, is this correct?
Boost, I personally used it in China, wifi calling works, sms receiving works, no roaming pack added.
Felix $20 add-on valid for 1 year. Vodafone $5 per day
Warning: Boost have told me they are not supporting wifi calling from overseas back to Australia. They did last year. They won't show me any relavant T&Cs. Im now stuck overseas for 2 months
Quote from Support:
"I completely understand that this may not be the outcome you were hoping for, and I truly appreciate your patience. The resolution remains the same—you will need an international roaming pack to make calls internationally, including through Wi-Fi calling. I kindly recommend recharging to enable international calls. I also want to clarify that the pack details do not include a provision for international calling via Wi-Fi. I sincerely regret any inconvenience this may cause," unquote
