Looking for a Floor Jack (or Trolley Jack) — Decent Price & Where to Buy?

Hey all, just after some advice. I’m looking to pick up a floor jack (or a decent trolley jack) to do some basic maintenance on my car — mainly brakes, wheels, and the odd suspension check. I already have ramps, which are great for oil changes, but anything that involves removing the tires is obviously a no-go without a proper jack.

I’m not a full-time DIY mechanic, just working on my own car occasionally, so I don’t need something ultra high-end — just something safe, solid, and reasonably priced. Looking to tackle some brakes, and stab links soon.

So:

What’s a decent price range I should be aiming for?

Any recommendations on where to buy? (Repco, Supercheap, Amazon, etc.)

Or should I be scouring Facebook Marketplace/Gumtree for second-hand options?

Open to any suggestions or brands to look for (or avoid). Appreciate the help!

  • Look for low-profile

    • …depends on the car … and axle stands

      • Can do more makes and models with a low-profile, unless OP is only working one one car forever

yep maybe, but they often don't go high enough for some other cars/utes

OP doesn't have to work on all vehicles, just theirs

        • i get low profile, any good deals or value somewhere? I know costco has one for $200 or so and of course that costco return policy.

@m4gician: Costco used to sell an Arcan brand jack which was pretty good. They used to be a lot cheaper than $200 but everything is gone up massively in price the last few years so that's probably cheap now.

            • @apsilon: Does costco still sell arcan?

              • @ATTS: No idea, cancelled my membership a few years ago.

                • @apsilon: Nice, out of curiosity why did you cancel? I considered cancellation though the fuel savings were enough to maintain membership in our circumstances

                  • @ATTS: They got rid of most of the products I was buying and given the nearest one was a 40min drive each way it just wasn't worth it.

                • @apsilon: It seems there warehouse deals arnt as good as before aswell

                  • @ATTS: Lots of their stuff isnt 'cheap' its just in oversized quantity to give you the illusion of it being cheap.

    • What brand low profile trolley jack u use?

      Was arcan still good

    toolpro 3000kg

    • These are awesome. Mine gets abused and works like new. Have to bleed it occasionally.

And the matching pin type axle stands
      .

I recently upgraded to a toolpro 'hybrid' alloy trolley jack. Didnt want a low profile one as our cars are not low. At the time seemed to be a combo of best price and features.

You just missed the auto parts shop sales yesterday.

Could you just use the scissor jack that came with the car and use axle stands if it’s for the occasional diy?

    • +1

Scissor jacks are the worst regardless of the car. Painful, hurt your handles, needs to be in a specific spot, takes ages.

I got a flat tyre on my 4WD and it was terrible! Since that day, I now carry a proper full jack full time, it has come in handy helping out the odd person and covers myself. So much quicker and easier.

Always useful to have a quick look here before buying anything that may injure you if it fails

    Recalls

    • That sounds scary to fail like that!

The trolley jacks I got from Costco has served me well for the past 15yrs.

As with anything, if you service and look after things, they last forever.

You can grab a bargain if you search on facebook marketplace/gumtree. As you're mechanically inclined, then looking into how to services them will help you get a cheap "faulty" one, and making it work as new.

    • Did you experience any rust on a jack of that age?

      • Great question, I had to go check to answer.

There is a bit of surface rust on the bolts and rods, but the main body and parts do not have any rust. Note though, it lives in the garage, I don't think I've ever used it in the rain either. Only time it's touched water is when I wipe it down with a wet rag, may have hosed it down once.

        • I c thanks

  • If you can wait till the EoFY in a couple months there would be some big savings around you'd might jag this for around $240 at a guess.
Then remember they're probably just re-badged Super,C TradeTools and probably Syd,tools etc

    • Is renegade considered a good brand?

      240 sounds nice

      • Bought this in may 22, they don't sell this anymore but I'm glad I got it. https://imgur.com/a/RDG6Xmm
You should see more deals like this coming up closer to EoFY from tool shops.
