Do OzBargainers Get Bargain Internet?

The Guardian today reports a survey of 1065 people done by Essential for ACCAN (Australian Communications Consumer Action Network) that says Australians are paying an average $84 per month for their home internet connection whether it is through the NBN or competing services like 5G.

20% pay over $100
31% pay between $81 and $100
30% pay between $61 and $80
13% pay $60 or less

Also 74% of those using less that 50GB/month are still paying over $60/month, with an average of $71.

        • I googled 50% off More CBA Yello and there was a link to OZB haha… offer appears to be targeted for some home loan package only.

I feel gypped with my 40% off lol.. have multiple loans and CC with them.

    • I've been with MORE 50/20 for 5 months and looking to change due to drop outs
they which occur multible times a day and each last less than 30Sec each time.
I was with them a couple of years ago with the same problems.
Does not happen with other ISP's

  • Mostly WFH and gets claimed on tax. Won't skimp on internet with slow speeds or second-rate RSPs, but happy to churn between good providers. Right now that means Leaptel, Launtel and ABB.

Still on the $99 promo for 1000/50 on Leaptel. When it expires I'll probably stay, $114 is still quite a bit cheaper than the $139/149 I used to pay on Launtel/ABB before the nbn price drops.

Will undoubtedly go for 2Gbps rather than a cheaper 1Gbps plan come Sep.

    1Gbps Nbn HFC through ABB. @ $129. That's $10 more than the 250Mbps plan.

Don't need 1Gbps, but it helps with downloading games. Nbn should have more versatile plans closer to the end of the year. Will definitely drop to a 500Mbps plan if it saves me $10-$20 a month

  • $90 on an older 100/40 Optus plan (HFC) with Fetch, used to come with Optus Sports too but they took that away.

  • $69.95 pm for 200mb up/down via Capti in Brisbane. Their service is pretty good and I haven't seen anything comparable in the city area

  • The one bad thing about the NBN is it set a floor price for all services. Almost all companies have the same NBN prices (apart from short term specials), as they all wholesale from the one service provider. Competing services (like 5G) set their prices according to similar NBN landline prices, but a bit more expensive. Starlink adds another layer of cost over that.

There isn't much price competition. People lucky enough to live within line of sight of a tower in the CBD can do better, but that's about it.

No point paying more since everything runs on NBN now.

Pay for the speed you want and go with the company with the cheapest price. Job done.

      That's…not how the nbn works.

nbn is responsible for the infrastructure and connection between your house to your local nbn Point of Interconnect (usually an old Telstra exchange.). That's it.

Each RSP still has the responsibility of routing it from there to your destinaton on the internet. Meaning differing fibre backhaul provider(s) to get the data from that POI into their network, peering agreements with other networks, CDN interconnections/cache nodes, and domestic and international routing configurations to get your packets to their destination, of varying levels of capacity, redundancy and cost, ultimately impacting speed, latency, and reliability.

You are right 👍 but at the speeds offered to your home. (usually under 200/50 tops) Paying more for say Telstra over cheaper options is a waste of money. I've changed to the cheapest service over and over and had no affect in ping or speeds whatsover…

Most likely because they all Goto the same exchange and offer the same products.

Only had and issue 2x and quick phonecall they reset the ports remotely and boom back to normal.

  • Yes the 50/20 school scheme, $0, with superloop, extended to June 2028

  • Superloop 1000/50 $99/month
I think it's worth the price as it is never down and never slow.

    • I would definitely NOT say never down. I've got one of them ACCC Internet measuring boxes on my 1000/50 FTTP Superloop connection.

None of these were scheduled outages.

Average download speed is 898Mbps, upload 44.60Mbps. The individual test speeds fluctuate a fair bit, with most being in the high 900's, but every now and then several tests in a row drop down to about 600Mbps ~ 400Mbps.

      • Obviously something wrong either with your cabling or hardware. FTTP should never have an outage unless scheduled maintenance or something major.

        • The other day it was evident that this was not a problem with my equipment, but probably some routing issue. DNS would not resolve using Cloudflare (1.1.1.1), but Google DNS (8.8.8.8) was fine. If it was my hardware, then clearly I would not be able to reach some parts of the Internet and not others. I used my phone via Belong to check whether the problem was at Cloudflare and it wasn't. The Cloudflare DNS resolver was fine and fast as always via the Belong network, yet unreachable via Superloop network.

Superloop support insist that there is nothing wrong because my NBN termination device (aka modem) has an uptime of a couple of months and shows no disconnections. I've tried a whole bunch of things on my end and am confident it is not my equipment. And therein lies the problem - I'm experiencing real issues and Superloop support won't move past the first page of the script. We are stuck at the step where their only solution is to "reset" the line, aka remote reboot of the NBN modem. At least this time, when I got in touch with them, the wait for support wasn't horrendous.

I'm sure Superloop, just like many other providers, is perfectly fine when things work. It's what happens when things go wrong that matters. I'll keep working with Superloop support on resolving this.

However, it clearly can NOT be said that Superloop never has issues.

          • @peteru: Then try another provider to confirm. Aussie or Buddie are also 100% up time.

  • yes, you need to connect to a new plan every 6 months

  • It's a big value sale for me. My time is worth say $1000/hour, then downloading that file 20 mins faster on Gigabit is worth it several times over the month. Also being able to host and stream from NAS Plex server to the internet is highly valuable.

  • Permanent $89/m for Superloop 250/25

    • Is this NBN?

      • Yes

        • Where can I see this on site etc?

          • @Zuelly: Don't think you can get it on the website. It was a temporary speedboost that never reverted.

  • $59/month for 50/50 unlimited thorugh Pineapple. I don't even know how much I download in a month as I don't have to worry about it.

Could pay $69 for 150/150 but to be honest 50/50 is perfectly fine for me as a single person. I actually get about 65 when downloading via Steam as well so pretty happy with that.

  • +1

No, but if I paid it myself I would be on a cheaper plan.

  • $39.99 for 1000/100 iiNet FTTB special for 6 months
