Plenty of others around the shops, I use a bluetooth dongle with an app cost a few bucks for the dongle and $5 for the app. You can get ones from aliexpress that will even start some cars without the key, with a lot more features. the brand on aliexpress is autel.

    • i have one. but I don't trust it. been sitting for decade..somewhere

      • I agree, and my lack of trust is really because I don’t understand the technology.

Since the OBD interface has read/write ability (to reset codes), what control does it actually have over the computer?

I feel like you’re placing a lot of trust into something that could corrupt the computer if it has bad software or components etc.

Having said that, I used at least two of these cheap OBD devices from eBay many years ago on my first few cars without issue. I’m just more risk averse now I suppose.

Happy for someone who actually knows about this to correct me and ease my concerns lol. As I said, I don’t fully understand the tech.

    I'm confused.

Pretty standard fare from this poster.

    • You and me both. This thread looks like a paragraph of letters that just became victims of the Easter road toll.
The key question is deeply hidden in there, and 'might' be found like an Easter egg hunt. Maybe that's the idea.

  • Yeah, an OBD reader isn’t going to tell your (fropanity) all with that issue… pressed a button for the defogger and smoke came out the vents… that is WELL outside the scope of your average OBD scanner.

Good news is though, it probably burnt through part of the wiring harness and cooked into part of the engine ECU harness, so that’s always fun.

  • Is this for your corolla with just 90,000 klms?

      v6 manual camry with 400,000km

It's just outside the run in phase so minor issues are likely in the future.

      • Cars that old can usually be checked by connecting a wire to 2 pins in the obd port and counting the flashes of the engine light.

        • +2

How many flashes for smoke coming out of vents?

  • What car do you have? Usually there's a way to read the code off the dash (via a series of blinking lights in sequence) so you don't need to plug in the a scan tool. Last three cars I have had had this feature, not sure if the newer ones do.

Usually googling "<car model> keydance" get's you to a forum post about it, along with the code list. For example. my old X-Trail you had to turn the key off and on, then press the accelerator pedal down 7 times before the engine light flashes corresponding to the codes that were faulting.

    • Old camry v6

  • Now looking at the Xtools IP500 or D7

    • Isn't the ip500 for BMW family cars (BMW, mini, RR) ??

      • there is a toyota one with IP500

  • UPDATE I think put in Ron91 petrol in …, and it's suppose to have higher 95 or 98…

P0330 fault code. 1MZ-fe engine knocking or pinging sensory.

      "v6 manual camry with 400,000km"
      Needs better than 91? Really?
      .

      • what does this mean? so I SHOULD USE ron 98 next time???? does high km mean more better petrol???

        • It means either the sensor or the wiring is faulty. Given something has let smoke out I'd say your wiring shorted out.

          • @JIMB0: i'm just going to fill ron98 and hopes it's okay..

            • @ilove: maybe the smoke was something else… like outside air

            • @ilove: That's pointless. In the absence of a functioning knock sensor it will have already gone into limp mode and pulled timing to protect the engine. Has it been noticeably less powerful lately?

              • @JIMB0: how to know for sure it's in limp mode?

                • @ilove: if the knock sensor is oversensitive.. and giving a P0330 code. ? it will go in limp mode?

so I need to replace the sensor? even if it's sensitive.., it'll trigger it to go in limp mode?

what if it's not in limp mode?

                  • @ilove: It's already in limp mode. Just put 91 in the tank, a sticker over the check engine light and keep driving it.

It's a big job to replace the sensor and wiring.

                    • @JIMB0: i'm not sure it's in limp mode?

                      • @ilove: You have a V6 manual, you must be a bit of revhead. When you give it the beans is it noticeably less powerful since the light came on?

Even if the cars not in limp mode I'm certain that the driver is.

                    • @JIMB0: big job? are you using sarcasm? or not?

                      • @ilove: You have to take a lot of stuff off the top of the engine to access it, then repair the wiring. A big job for someone who struggles with googling stuff.

"what does this mean? so I SHOULD USE ron 98 next time???? does high km mean more better petrol???"

          https://www.redbook.com.au/cars/results/?q=(And.Service.Redbook..RecordType.Car..CountryCode.AU..(C.Make.Toyota..Model.Camry.).Cylinders.6..Transmission.Manual.)

now if go to fuel type in the filters on left hand side of the screen it is only showing unleaded as an option, meaning redbook data shows no need for premium fuel for v6 manual camrys
of course your fuel door and/or owners manual will tell you more accurately, I just don't have a manual v6 camry to look at
