Lenovo IdeaPad 1 Help

Hey everyone
Got a Lenovo IdeaPad 1 for my daughter for her first year of Highschool this year. Got the laptop in December 2024 as a Xmas present for her and it was $799 from JB. Kinda think we got ripped off but we needed one asap

So the problem is -

Ok so I noticed when she first started school these strange marks on the screen in a line so I cleaned it off. I just checked again today and the marks are there but this time they don’t come off and looks like it’s scratches caused by the keyboard. The laptop is kept in a soft protection bag na carried inside my Daintree backpack and she is very careful with it, not one single mark on it apart from these screen marks

I did a google and it seems it’s a common issue?

It’s right in the middle of the screen and goes from one side to the other so it’s very annoying. Is this under warranty for a defect?
Ive had a laptop before and now a MacBook and never had this issue at all. Surely the laptops keyboard shouldn’t cause damage to the screen and it’s designed to be closed.

What should I do? Contact Lenovo or JB?

Any help would be great appreciated

Thanks!

  • Is this under warranty for a defect?

Only one way to find out!

Either…. Try Lenovo first as that is all JB is going to do.

  • From a consumer right perspective, I would actually contact JB Hi-Fi first, as the laptop is still new the retailer that sold you the product responsible for handling any issues with defects or products that are not fit for purpose. 1

This can be an issue if the laptop lid is thin / not made of stiff materials (like aluminium, as in case of Macbooks and/or business-grade laptops). Ideapads are not particularly robust, especially compared to something like a Lenovo Thinkpad T-series or Dell Latitude, so that's one reason to not buy a consumer grade laptop but instead buy either a previous gen business laptop (if one can afford it) or buy a refurbished device with decent battery health.

    1. Note that scratches on a laptop display can be considered just as normal wear and tear, so don't get your hopes up about a complete product replacement. However, since it's not costing you any money to ask for a repair, you might as well cross fingers and hope for a better outcome than nothing.

    • Ok thanks I’ll call JB

To be honest tho, who would think buying a Laptop that the actual keyboard would cause damage to the screen, how many people would think of that and it should never happen on any laptop

      Thanks for your reply

  • If there is a still a direct access to Lenovo by bypassing JB, Lenovo would replace it with a brand new one.

    • What do you mean?
I can contact Lenovo via a support chat going by the website, couldn’t see a phone number

      • It was years ago there was a direct access way thru like email something no matter where you buy from, if there is a chat then contact them first, they would replace it.

  • Can you upload a screenshot?

  • Is the keyboard itself dirty? Those plastic screens get can scratched up pretty easily if there's any debris on the keyboard when you close the lid

    • Nope I checked as I thought there was something on the keyboard causing it. The entire laptop looks new apart front the screen, my daughter is very good at looking after things and she is very upset this has happened unfortunately
