I buy in 1kg from my local roaster because you need minimum 1kg to get free shipping. I've also occasionally bought 1.5kg or 2kg deals from various offers on ozbargain.
I only drink 2 coffees a day (on average).
As long as you're buying beans, and grinding fresh yourself each day, the beans last reasonably well in a good quality sealed container in the cupboard. I find I just need to tweak the grind settings after a few weeks to make sure I'm still getting a good pour. But it's minor, like 1 or 2 notches on my sunbeam EM0480 grinder.
If you're buying ground coffee, then yeah, I'd only be buying 250g at a time, max.
If you don't have one, buy a half decent burr grinder. The difference is absolutely noticeable, and you can probably absorb the cost with the savings you get from buying beans in larger quantities (over enough time…).

How do other OB'ers find these deals? I have a gaggia classic and buy my coffee in 250g bags. Takes me bout 5 days to go through. I'm anxious about purchasing larger quantities as they may go stale. Doers anyone actually buy the 1.5kg deals for home use? How long does it take you to go through it. Is there any issues without the beans becoming old?
